Exactly, Paul. Growing old sucks, but it beats the heck out of the alternative.

Oh I don't know, I've grown old kicking and screaming; and now that I'm here there are certain aspects that I quite enjoy.

For instance most folks show a bit of respect for us elderly, Old Fut Discounts, and people jump to help me do things like carry grocery bags and other moderately heavy objects.

I'm pretty sure that men jumped to open doors, carry grocery bags and other heavy objects FAR more often 30 years ago than they do now....

Which, by the way, is the definition of old.

Old is 15 years older than me... always has been. Think about it; when I was 5 someone who was 20 was old, when I was 20 someone who was 35 was old. Now that I'm 71, someone who's 86 is OLD!

I'm with you! I'm having a lot more fun in my adultery than I ever had in my childhood...

Getting really does have its benefits. In fencing competitions I get to fight in the 'Veterans Divisions, against old people, making it much easier to win. On dive boats, people always move out of the way to give me the most convenient seating and equipment space, and offer to carry my tanks. When motorcycle touring, folks will often come over and ask if I want help with our saddlebags and duffel. In the jungle people frequently offer to help us set up our hammocks.

But the real joy comes, as it did last Saturday at the Fencing Salle, when a new member said; "I think you are a little bit older than me." I asked;"How old are you?" He replied; "I'm 52."
"Bless you, my child."

Haha, Stitch. My grandfather was a regional fencing champion. However, he drank and smoked like the good Itish/French Creole boy he was, so died before I was born.

I admit, I'd certainly appreciate my 35 year old body a lot better than I did then. OTOH, I'm really glad I don't have my 21 year old brain and attitude!
