I just finished the next in the series, Furious, in which we deal with a Longknife reduced to charity. But not for long. I had lost track of this series, and was pleased to link back in to it again. Fluff, but fun fluff. Sadly, the Audible narration of these books is barely tolerable, so I ended up doing more reading than listening.
Finished off the rest of the Kris Longknife series. This is MilSF fluff, but quite enjoyable. Not really anything to get excited about, but a good read.

Currently reading The Resistance Man, by Martin Walker. This is #6 in the Bruno, Chief of Police series, and I'm currently doing more listening than reading, but that will shift now that Kris Longknife is out of the way.
Now this, on the other hand, is another real winner. I really quite like this series. Plus I'm listening to it more than reading it, having had to give up on listening to the Kris Longknife books and switch to reading. The narrator is Robert Ian Mackenzie, and he does a very good job with this quirky series.

Next up is still open. I'd like to re-read Shogun, but it is so long I'm not sure I want to start it while I'm working so many hours. No, I think instead, the next Amelia Peabody -- Deeds of the Disturber by Elizabeth Peters. That'll be fun, and an easy read.

I'm in the middle of "Moon Over Soho," Ben Aaronovitch's second book in the 'Rivers of London' series, and loving it. The writing is witty and well thought out, as is the entire concept of the series, and I'm having trouble putting it down to get my chores done! If you plan to read the series, do so in book order. It will make the story line flow... like the rivers of London, I suppose!

I've both in dead-tree format, and enjoyed them both.

I read this years ago, when I was as student at the University of Arkansas and thoroughly enjoyed it. So much so, that I have the First Edition hardback, in F/F condition.

I also met him, along with Francis Irby Gwaltney, another Arkansas writer. ("Destiny's Chickens," an hilarious 'red-neck' novel.)

'Stoner' was nominated for an important literary award at the time (I"m pretty sure), but I can't remember if it was the National Book Award or the Pulitzer Prize.

ADDED: In checking, I see that 'Stoner' did indeed WIN the National Book Award for Best Novel. It shared the award with 'Chimera," by John Barth. (Barth, a post-modernist, is another writer whom I read and collect.)

It's been a while since I posted in this thread. I set Kris Longknife to the side for a week to read a review book, True Calling by Siobhan Davis. I found myself caught up in the plot and the characters, but annoyed as heck at the blatant scientific mistakes in this YA SF Romance novel. The author is from Ireland, but her characters are supposedly from Connecticut. There were some strange 've and 'd constructs that don't sound right for Connecticut in my ear. "I've to remind myself", "we've to perform a dance", "We'd enough information". She also gave away her origins with "light black shimmery off-the-shoulder jumper and pink cami underneath". I found it hard to give the book a rating when I enjoyed the story so much, but the "voice" just grated on my ear.

In addition to Kris Longknife: Daring, I read Sir Philip's Folly, another of the Poor Relations series by Marion Chesney (aka M. C. Beaton) and A Hidden Witch by Debora Geary. I do have to say that A Hidden Witch was a surprisingly emotional book. I'm eager to pick up the next in the series!

It was a sort of prequel to his Videssos series. And OK read, but more satisfying, I suspect, if one has read the other books first.

Then I read Castaway Planet by Eric Flint and Ryk E Spoor. Swiss Family Robinson in space, but quite fun.

And now I'm reading Coming Out Atheist by Greta Christina. So far it seems a bit US-centric, but I suppose that's inevitable, despite best efforts to include international mentions.

I'm a little more than halfway through The Dispossessed, but I am also reading Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale for English class.

Atwood is a much faster read. That may be because I am on a schedule, or it may be that Bejeweled is more interesting than Le Guin at this point.

Just finished reading Wild Cards, a compilation of short stories, edited by George R. R. Martin. I managed to read through the entire book and found it a chore.

Now on to The Vagrant by Peter Newman and hoping this brings more entertainment.

Future City Blues is a set of three short stories by three different authors. Each paints a picture of the future, not only in the setting of the story, but because each is a teaser to a series.

"The Wrong Tom Jacks" by Simon Kewin introduces Simms, a genehunter. In this futuristic world collecting clones of the famous departed is a hobby of the rich. Nevermind that it's illegal. Simms' neural implants help him stay one step ahead of the authorities. That is, until a client hires him to get the DNA of the wrong Tom Jacks.

"Tripler: The Beginning" by Neil Volger explores a brand-new terror: Tripling, the ability of a person to split into three very real versions of him or her self.

Milo James Fowler wraps up the trilogy quite nicely with "Doppleganger's Curse." What is a celebrity to do when her look-alike is trying to kill her? Amanda Forsythe hires Charlie Madison, private investigator.

While each introduces a series, each works very well as a stand-alone story. You won't have to buy the sequels to appreciate the narratives herein. But if you like sci-fi, action or adventure, you will want to.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
