Basic help request

I have so many questions (I'm not too great with computers or apps I’m afraid!) and I would be so grateful of some help. Okay, so the story so far is, I have a fire HDX with CC (full version 3.6.3 I believe). I am running calibre on my home PC, and somehow I have managed to set up the wireless server, and I have got my Fire (CC) to connect to it. I was so proud of myself at this point! LOL.
When I connect to “content server” I can download books with CC, and even read them. However, always a message comes up saying that “if you open the kindle reader from here, your reading position will be returned to the start” or something like that. This is bothersome for obvious reasons.
So, I have tried and tried to find how to open the book differently, but I can only manage to open it with the CC app. There must be a way for me to move the book to my Fire, and read it using kindles reader surely? Else do I need another app?
I did look through the forum last night, for ages, and I couldn’t find any solutions. There is so many references to other apps and stuff, programing etc, all which is far above my paygrade I'm afraid.
As for CC, I must have bought it at some time, as reading here, it seems there is a free version, where the app icon has a stamp saying the same, whereas mine doesn’t have. I haven’t used the Fire as much as I would have liked, as I found it a little intimidating, but following my success with the “sharing” setup, I intend to learn more and get full use. Oh, also, to say that I haven’t used it much, I am surprised that the CC is showing a current version. Does this app update automatically somehow? I cant see how to “update” it manually.
Okay, enough for now. If I can at least get the first issue sorted I will be happy for a while.
Thank you

Unfortunately, Amazon did not design their reading app very well, it apparently took chaley considerable effort to get the builtin reader to work at all and even then the tricks he used will make the reading position reset I believe.
Somewhere in the settings you can control where MOBI formats get sent, so that the builtin can see them.
See here for more details: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...25&postcount=5

(CC will automatically update according to your Appstore update settings.)

Thank you eschwartz. I will look at this later today when i get some time. Seems like Kindle only want people to use Amazon and not other library programs... or am I totally wrong?

Its times like this when i go back to picking up real books!

You are totally right. Notice the appalling lack of competitor's apps in the Amazon appstore (well, they have some stuff in the appstore, but marked as "incompatible" with actual Kindle devices ).

i also have a kindle fire HDX but I chose to install a reader app for epub and then use CC to transfer my books as epub.
that bypasses the issue you are having and also stops the bokos covers appearign on the carousel every time you read something. there are many epub reader apps to choose form, some have free trial/demo versions , and the ones no it amazon store can mostly me obtained elsewhere & sideloaded.

meanwhile there is a simple CC tweak to allow your mobi/azw books to appear correctly, just change the default download directory within CC for those formats to "books", instead of "downloads". you can leave it as "downloads" for other formats.

CC will then put your amazon format books into the KF books folder and they will be recognized as books and appear in the KF books tab.

Okay, Im going to have a crack at this, also will look for a epub reader as you suggest. Not sure how to get into CC, but will try (I'll get back to you if I can't find how).

I think also I need to get to know my Kindle Fire better. I have downloaded a few books on it, and will read those first. Silly me, didn't even know about how to set the bookmarks, even though my reading position was set back to the start of the book each time I opened it, I didn't know that the bookmarks could be used (doh!!!), which I have now found! I presumed that these too would be muted, but they aren't. I'm sure however, that a better reader will be the solution long term.

I'm still flying high however, after setting up and enabling the content server. Seems I tried this many times previously, and it never worked for me. This time it went smoothly.

I have also downloaded metadata and cataloged some 500 books of my circa 1500 book collection so far. My digital library is actually taking shape, and I am so pleased. Sat in the garden today and downloaded a book from "my" server... boy did that make me smile!!!

In my cc, I have set /storage/emulated/0/books as the path for amazon book formats. I leave epub setting as default. There is also a setting for what default format you want cc to use when it sees multiple formats in calibre
