I don't think it's a terribly likely scenario - dropping or bending the device is far more likely - but I wouldn't rule it out as a possibility. |

Sunlight and (black) plastic is not a particularly good combination. I've seen stuff melt in the sun before, here in Germany... and no device will thank you for the heat that sunlight produces either.

Interesting how every now and then we see a complaint of this type. Now if we were a kindle forum, I suspect we would see the same complaints about the kindle to new converts..
Bottom line is simply this regardless of the fact what reader you use the complaints are all the same. Diff people diff devices diff forums, but underlying it all we just like to bitch and moan! I have no issues with my kobo, I have no experience with any other reader and can not offer any opinion on them at all. That might also be a strong indication of the quality of the kobo readers since there are about 7 in the household, but honestly its simply this. It works for me and I have no desire to change the mix at this time. regards Jack |

I wonder if the black/white parts of the screen get to significantly different temperatures when left in the sun? It might be wise to have the screen go blank when the device turns itself off if it might be left in the sunlight.

It's yet another of the many reasons to use a decent case, so the screen is covered when not in use.

Piece of advice for dealing with Kobo customer service. If you are having a problem, report it. Get it on the record. And if it is unresolved as you are nearing the end of the warranty, either insist they fix it right then, or if they are having you try something, get some kind of assurance they aren't going to drop you when that year ticks by. They will guard that end of warranty like a fortress, even if a replacement inside the warranty period doesn't solve the problem.

So in a nutshell: The world is a hazardous place and eReaders are precious and delicate devices that should most definitely be kept safe in a sleeve/cover/whatever.

I don't understand why the OP had multiple screen-breaks with Kobos, but not with other devices. It didn't help that he came in roaring, but that aside, if what he says is true, it's weird. AFAIK Kobo screens don't have a higher rate of breakage than for example Kindles. They both the same screen manufactured by the same company. The OP must have been very very very (3 X breakages) unlucky.

Bookeen was the only brand I know of that had spontaneous screen breakage. That was I think back in the days of the Cybook.

I don't think that was spontaneous - it was just that the Cybook 2 had a very flimsy plastic shell which was extremely easy to bend and hence fracture the screen substrate. Thankfully most readers since then (including ones from Bookeen) have had much more rigid shells.

Re: Sun
I am an expat and spend most of my time in very warm and sunny places, so I cannot say anything about E-Readers under very cold conditions, but I have an extensive experience about E-Readers usage under the sun and warm conditions. It can happen that I leave (stupidly enough) my reader on and with the cover open for a few moment in the sun, an hour max. Readers do not like that. They will cease to work for a while and some of them will even display a message telling you that the Reader need to cool down to work again. My Sonys, my Kindles and my Kobos have never had a problem to start again afterwards. The only brand that died on me because of sun exposure is Pocketbook. Twice. And the Display just went black, it did not show the same as if it had fallen. I am now in general really careful to close the cover and set the Reader in the shade if I do not know how long I will be busy elsewhere. This said, I have read for hours near the pool, even in the whirlpool, with the sun on my PW, now my Voyage, or my H2O without any trouble. |
