Just finished "The Deeds of the Disturber", by Elizabeth Peters; the 5th book in the "Amelia Peabody" series. Amelia and Emerson are back in London following their most recent season's excavations in Egypt, and get caught up in the usual series of criminal exploits that pursue them wherever they go in seems. Enormously enjoyable, as always - a wonderful series.

Bruce Fottler's Dover Park is a ride! If you like twists, this one is a roller-coaster.
For me, the exposition was a little hard to follow. I found it a bit rushed and it was tricky to keep the characters straight in my mind. But by the second chapter, I was hooked, and could hardly stop reading. Can there be too many plot twists? I suppose each reader must answer that for him or her self. But you'll never know if you don't grab a copy and read it. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. |

Currently reading "When Books Went to War: The Stories that Helped Us Win World War II" by Molly Manning. It describes the evolution of the Armed Services Edition book distribution to American forces during WW2.

Another library book came in for me, so I am putting War of Honor on hold to read DragonFlight. It has probably been 25 years since I read this, so I am really looking forward to it.
War of Honor has been interesting, but I have been skimming large passages of info dumps. At about 1/3 finished with it I am certainly agreeing with CRussel's comment about it being a 400 page book trying to get out of the 800 page book it's trapped in. Edit: So far while I have enjoyed DragonFlight, I am really irritated by the lack of proofing they did when converting to digital. I have highlighted around 50 locations where in their conversion they have removed periods from between sentences It is really hard to read when they do that That little dot is important! Missing periods is the most common offender, but they also have some obvious OCR errors in other places, such as "I'm" getting mutated to "Tm" or "same" being changed to "saine". Very poorly done. For anyone who is looking this was published by Random House on Feb 26, 2002 as a Kindle version (maybe as a mobi at the time?) according to Overdrive and Amazon. There is also an collection of three books that might have been done better, but was published only a month later so ??? Last edited by Dazrin; 04-22-2015 at 11:42 AM. Reason: Added comments about OCR conversion. |

While reading the Analog, I've also read the only new content in Grantville Gazette VII - a new short story by Eric Flint. (All the other stories were published in the Grantville Gazette Magazine, issues 10-20.) And an interesting little story it was, too.

I'm still reading Wolf Hall. It's a long book. I'm 76% of the way through it now, so should finish it this weekend.
Disappointingly, though, the battery on my old Kindle is definitely on the way out. I'm fairly sure I charged it up before I started, and it was flat enough to be showing an exclamation mark last night. That's just 76% of one book for a full charge. I normally leave the wifi on, but I turned it off a few days ago when I noticed it was getting low. I guess it's time I thought about a replacement. Oh, and I am enjoying the book. ![]() |
