The announcement below comes as the London Book Fair begins later this week.

"3M Library Systems today announced that it will expand its 3M Cloud Library Digital Lending System to libraries in the UK and Australia. Borrowers in these countries will benefit from 3M’s entry into the market as it boosts public libraries’ options to meet the increasing demand for digital content."

My Sydney, Aus, library currently uses Overdrive so it will be interesting to see the impact the 3M has.

Does the 3M system use the same method of book delivery that Overdrive does, or is different software needed to access books?

You need a specific application for it, although it's Adobe DRM too (you have to authorize it), so you would have to download it with that application, and later you can read with any application with supports it.
