Am I sideloading PRS 300 properly?

I plug the ereader in with a usb cord. I open the icon. I click on Digital Editions>Annotations>Database>Media>books and I paste my ebooks in there.

I'm asking because it doesn't work. I get the endless spinning wheel when I uplug the ereader.

Maybe I should use Calibre to put the books on there?

Thanks.

Don't use the copy & paste. Use drag & drop. Drag it from the current file your book is in to the file on your reader & choose the copy option not the move option so it keeps a copy of the book on your computer as well as your reader.

Make sure you always select "Safely Eject Reader/hardware" when disconnecting the device from your computer. Don't just unplug it. You could damage the device.

You should use Calibre and you should visit Apprentice Alf to get and learn about the DRM removal plugin for Calibre. No DRM means no DRM issues. And it means your books do actually become yours.

Thanks Shopaholic. I do the unmount bit (I'm on Linux), but I'm not sure what you mean about the loading part. The way I interpret what you said is to put the ebook file on my Desktop and then drag it over the ereader icon on the Desktop and drop it on the icon? Would that be correct?

And not sure about the rest. I'm dragging and dropping and then copying? In my mind if I drag the file and drop it, it will still be on the computer (Desktop) and (hopefully) in the ereader as well.

Tried JS. Too complicated for me. Remember I'm Linux (the OS where everything is hard ).

I don't know Linux. Do you know what I mean when I say look at your files in Explorer? Whatever the equivalent is in Linux where you see all the files on your computer? You have your books in a file somewhere. Find that file and right click select it with your mouse, drag it to the folder in the reader where your books are and drop it. (let go of the right mouse button) There should be a pop-up, there is in Windows, where you get options that you can choose. Choose - Copy. If you choose move it will move it from the folder on your computer to the folder on the reader. This will not leave a copy of the book on your computer. That's why you don't want that.

If you left click the file and drag it to your reader it will permanently move the file from it's current location, on your computer, to the reader. Think of it this way, if you have a box of items in your bathroom and then pick it up and move it to your dining room, then the box will no longer be in the bathroom. Moving it does not leave it in two places at the same time. Does that make sense?

Thanks Shopaholic. Linux is different. I can left click and drag the file to a folder and it will be put into the folder and the original will stay on the Desktop. (It's weird: if I drag a file from the Desktop to a folder on the Desktop it will "move" and not copy it.)

So I think I'm okay with this.

Solution... Setup a dual-boot system with Windows and you'll have no problem setting up Calibre to remove DRM.

The logic is this - drag'n'dropping an item to a different drive defaults to COPY (as in DUPLICATE) whereas to the same drive defaults to MOVE (as in COPY plus DELETE source).

That would be a draw, JS. But then I'd have to deal with all the backlash from my Linux friends.

Yabbut Windows!

Gregg, use Calibre. I tried copying files on my PRS-650 and it didn't work for me either. Using Calibre worked right away.

Thanks JS. Believe me, I've been on the brink of the dual booting thing. Esp. with how cheap some of these Dells on ebay with Windows 7 are. ($89)

Thanks rjb. I'll definitely try that (if I can get it unstuck from its permanently loading mode).
