Back in the old days, when I was still playing with Nickel, there was a "Demo" function that I used that way. It might be interesting if something similar, with its power saving auto suspend, were implemented, outside Nickel. It would be a "slideshow" function I guess.

Thanks for your answers, Ken Maltby. So I will try to find answers on the koreader post now
May be a last question :
In KSM, what are the differencies between the .kobo and the .add folders ?
Because sometimes in some tutorials, they refer to a folder supposed to be found in the .kobo folder, but only exists in the .add folder.
So i used the .add folder and worked like a charm, but you know, I'm curious
And what about persistence in KSM ?

You can define a path to an image of your choice to be used when the file has no cover image. (in Advanced options)

You can set the brightness within Koreader, there has been some discussion at Github about that issue, recently, I would expect additional options in that regard, in recent or future nightlies.

"fmon" refers to the file monitoring process that Sergey provided to launch programs from within the stock Kobo user interface (Nickel). It was a very important accomplishment when it was introduced, and is still used for a number of useful functions. Many of us now use KSM to launch both Koreader and Sergey's Coolreader port, though.

Tshering just made that change to provide the .adds folder, with his release of KSM7. By moving the additional software out of the way of the Kobo updates, not only are the settings internal to that software unaffected but also the direct addressing relationships remain valid - when kobo implements an update to the firmware. So yes, the .adds folder is the one to use now. The install guides (including mine) try to provide for instructions that are up to date but also that cover those who might want to use the older process, as well.

Not sure what you mean by "persistence in KSM". Tshering has been providing the means to "partially" do updates, so that the hooks into the startup process are not overwritten, by the update. With that, you can apply an update (any time the process has you place a "KoboRoot.tgz" file in the .kobo folder/directory) without effecting KSM.

Luck;

Thanks for explanation.

I miss function of easily displaying random images from my Sony where you just put images in certain folder and that was all you need to do.

But, working with html files have also some advantages, as you say.

Speaking about this, would it be possible to affect system wide power off and suspend screens from KSM? Probably not, but it would be great if possible...

Well, in Sony ebook readers it functioned not as a live slideshow, but each time you suspended device you had different image, of course, if you had more than one.

But of course, though nice feature, I can live without it.

Hello myki,

You can set the intensity of the front light in KSM via "configure" > [general] ... See for a general description this post. As an example I provide the values 4, 10, and 20. You can set further values by editing the file .adds\kbmenu\confoptions\ksm_ini_options.txt. Use a unix style editor! In order to have the light on
  • select "configure" > "[general]" > "add item" > "startwithlighton=true"
  • select "return" > "save and exit"
Koreader has its own settings, which are not influenced by KSM.

If you select "tools" > "activate" > "x install poweroff.sh", the KSM power-off screen will be displayed also if you power off from nickel (vlasovsoft launcher's power-off screen however is not affected by this). This activation will last until the next firmware update.

In the first post of this thread, you can find the update files. You need to have installed both of them.

I installed KSM with the help from another post, so I missed the updates here
Now my KSM is in full screen, doesn't "reverse" anymore, and the light is on

Thanx again !

May be a last question : In the "how to" in the second message, about moving the "fmon" folder to ".adds", it said to edit the etc\init.d\on-animator.sh.
I succeeded using this method :
I copied the on-animtor.sh with the vlasovsoft file manager, to a folder that Windows is able to see, modified it, and moved it to the original place with the vlasovsoft file manager... Quite complicated

Is there a more simple method that I missed ??

I would have taken an on-animtor.sh from a firmware update package, or from the vlasovsoft package. Since I have always lying around a FW package, this is easier for me than to copy it from the reader. Of course after editing, you have to get it somehow on the system partition. Copying by vlasovsoft file manager, or kbterminal, or with the help of the update process (KoboRoot.tgz), are all rather convenient means. Others might prefer to edit the file in place to start with.

Thank you. Is there some documentation about all this useful options?

BTW, can't affect your reputation (karma button) at the moment, I affected yours too much lately.

Hello tshering, I would really appreciate help from you in testing the poweroff screen as in update 2 version.
Where do I come from: while still in update 1 I tried to let KSM show a poweroff screen image changing html code. To no avail, most certainly my fault having no knowledge of html. All I got was a blank screen. I didn't bring the code back, just lived with the blank screen on power off.
Then I updated tu update 2, and tried "tools" > "activate" > "x install poweroff.sh". Still powering off leads to a blank screen.
What do I have to do, starting from scratch, to have the random image poweroff? Please include basic html that I can copy and past. Thank you for your precious help.

In my experience, it's maybe best to start slowly. You made many useful posts here explaining many features. Write feature by feature in one place (new thread here), or even open some wiki file, so other users who know KSM may add their input.

It's just suggestion.

Knowing that you need to write a lot of documentation keeps you from starting that job, but if you add one point each day, over time you'd have well documented instructions how to use KSM.
