![]() ![]() ![]() It boggles the mind that these guys say (more than once) that the font and margin selection on the Kobo is too complicated and Kobo should make it easier. OMG, if you can't figure that you should be prohibited by law from owning, let alone reviewing an e-reader. ![]() If you want to visually compare the devices, this will give you a decent side by side comparison, just save yourself the grief and mute it. |

What I can see here is that Amazon will retain Voyage as their premium product (and its price) and maybe respond this year by making the Paperwhite 300 PPI as well and, who knows what "surprise" we'll get with 2nd Gen Voyage. I am not sure if this is applicable (maybe I am stupid by even doing this comparison) but I see Amazon as Apple in the e-reader market. If we see the trend, iPhone's specs is always behind nowadays compared to other smartphone makers, but they can still sell their products at a higher price. I guess, it is because of iOS. Same with Amazon. Their greatest shield will still be their ecosystem. Also, we all agree that the Kobo eBooks is much more expensive that Amazon's. So, if you buy books regularly, Kobo will get back the "discount" you get from Glo HD in the long run. Last edited by ryuji35; 04-10-2015 at 09:06 PM. |

^^^ I don't think Amazon cares what kobo does. They are in an even more dominant position in ebooks than Apple is on mobile.

That may be true, but when the 1st Kobo came out (and it was a far cry from being anything like equivalent to the current generation of Kindle at the time), Kindle pricing (and others) pricing dropped pretty quickly because Kobo was 1/2 the price. Price isn't everything, but it can speak loudly, especially with devices that a lot of people are going to see as equal. Yes I know there are differences, but to be honest, for me none of the features that Kindle has would entice me to buy it over a Kobo even at equal pricing. Others have different wants and will be willing to pay more or less depending on their wants. And there were a lot of people that baulked at the price of a Voyage when it came out and didn't buy on that basis alone.

I would suspect that this market segment is sufficiently small, and sufficiently fickle, that Amazon will not consider it profitable to target them. The vast majority of those who "baulked at the price of a Voyage" are likely to simply stay with the PW2, rather than move to Kobo simply for increased resolution. |

A little off topic, but at what point does dpi on a 6 inch eReader become so negligible that it simply ceases to matter as it pertains to basic reading - not displaying pictures?
Will the next-gen go beyond 300 dpi? Does it need to? |

Again, thanks. EDIT: Both the OTF and TTF fonts worked, though neither gave me the ability to use the Advanced Settings. I ended up keeping the Kindle one -- its sizes were a bit different and fit my usage better. I also updated to newest firmware 1.13.1 (I believe) and it does seem to give me a better selection of sizes. It also seemed to darken my fonts slightly -- but it may be my imagination, not sure. When I first installed the the update, it made my Constantia font bold -- ugly -- but I followed the advice of others here and just erased the Bold fonts. Funny it didn't work that way in 1.12.1. I'm guessing the technology is more expensive and that they wanted to match the old Glo's price point.

![]() Ok ok, so messy or not has nothing to do with it, but for various reasons many of us actually do not like the flat screen or the capacitive touch. I've read many posts where Aura owners have said the text is not as sharp as on the Glo, that the capacitive layer probably causes it, plus the odd crosshatch scratches visible on many of the capacitive screens. When the Aura came out and I thought that's the direction that Kobo is going toward now, I bought 2 more Glos so I wouldn't have to worry about nothing but capacitive touch being available. There's just no way I'd buy a capacitive touch ereader for myself. Choices that make everyone happy is always the best alternative, and I'm hoping that is why Kobo upgraded the Glo and kept its infrared touch and it's not just a price consideration. |

I don't mind IR on my Kindles, Nooks or Sony, but it seems quite a bit less responsive on my Glo. I find myself double and triple tapping on the Glo. Not quite sure why it would be different.

Thanks. I've avoided that because 1) I'm lazy and 2) By reading the instructions it seems like there are a lot of options I would have to either turn on or off and -- and this point -- I don't think I know enough about the Kobo to make wise decisions. But I'll study it a little more.

And I think it has the flat screen (like the Aura) and capacitive touch like the Aura. But I agree, it's still a good price for the screen. I'm pretty sure that Kindle will sooner (rather than later) lower the price of the Voyage.

I don't think the Glo HD will hurt Amazon that much. Their Eco system keeps them streets ahead plus the average Amazon customer won't know how to get their Amazon ebooks onto Kobo. I've no doubt it's a good device, and if anything every happens to my old Nook Glow then I might be tempted as its replacement. For me the Eco system is worth it for Amazon, whilst I have a Kobo H20 which I will use near water I read mainly on my Voyage and my HDX using Whispersync to keep in sync. Kobo just doesn't have what I need for a permanent switch.
