Yes, I want the LibreOffice_4.2.3.3_Linux_x86_deb. Anyway, no luck again.

That is because you typed:

Code:

sudo dpkg -i LibreOffice_4.2.3.3_Linux_x86_deb

Which tries to install a debian file called: "LibreOffice_4.2.3.3_Linux_x86_deb"

Since that is the name of the first folder, of course it didn't work.

As I said before: type

sudo dpkg -i *.deb

I thought that "*" was the equivalent of an ellipsis. Hence the extended file. Anyway, I ran it and the LO is in the Application Menu but it won't launch. (I also went to an odt file,right clicked and chose 'open with LO Writer 4.2.' It wouldn't open.)

Dunno, it clearly installed correctly... I would've just installed the version in the software center...

Maybe that version has a bug and the program crashed. Who knows. All I know is that it (LO from their own website) installed.

I don't know. I use that version on the two other computers and no problems.

When I went to my USC it did not show LO as installed.

Okay, ship is righted. Got rid of the suspicioius LO and downloaded the latest offering from the USC. (I think I made this whole thing just a little bit harder than it needed to be.)

Yeah, you know, I'm going to stay with USC from now on (when I can). I can get a little adventurous with the terminal and Gdbebi installer. I just make trouble for myself. I don't know enough to do those other things unless I'm advised to do so and VERY CAREFUL. Check my next post.

Okay, I've got Dropbox.

Preliminary question: I was given the choice of installing DB from a Ubuntu .deb and a Debian .deb. I chose the latter. From my subsequent research I realized I'd made the wrong choice. So question: Does Xubuntu (my distro) always use just Ubuntu .debs. (I have installed Sigil with the Gdebi installer. Should I get rid of the Gdebi installer?)

Okay, back to Dropbox. So as I said, I installed it with (what I believe was) the Debian .deb. So, tired of my avoiding the USC I installed DB on my other computer with the USC.

Now, the other (Debian.deb installed DB) computer’s DB was working fine, but I thought (the perfectionism in me), "I'll uninstall it and then re-install it via the USC--that way they'll be perfectly matched." And in my defence I went to Xubuntu chat and some seemingly responsible person there told me I could do just what I wanted (thru Synaptic).

So I first checked USC and there was this (I couldn't find it now in the USC) DB CLU extension something or other. (I think it was a "dummy" thing for DB.) So I uninstalled that. Then I went to Synaptic and found some DB stuff and uninstalled that. Then I went to the DB folder and deleted that.

Well, when I did that DB gave me a pop-up saying: 'Do you want to exit (which will re-install your Dropbox folder) or re-link? I chose re-link. That just gave me a DB sign-in pop-up. And I signed in.

And my DB folder was sitll in the tool bar and everything seemed normal. (And the two computer's sync properly.) And all with DB uninstalled on the one computer! (I even checked in the terminal and it said, 'Dropbox is not installed. Install it with sudo blah blah blah.')

Well, this made me kind of crazy wondering what was up, so I checked the Catfish File Finder and indeed there were all kinds of DB files.

So, leave well enough alone or should I install DB from the USC or the terminal?

And I've been experimenting with Copy, trying to actually have ALL my files in it. But there are drawbacks.

Whenever I download something it insists on going to the Downloads folder in the Home directory (not the Downloads folder in the Copy folder). And when I take a screenshot with Shutter (the screenshot app I use) it insists on going to the "pictures" folder in the Home folder (not the 'pictures' folder in the Copy folder).

Not deal killers but annoying. Should I be investigating symlinks or just live with it this way?

Check the individual programs, there should be an option for setting the default save folder in whichever browser you are using, Shutter might as well.

And don't worry about Dropbox. As I might have said earlier -- no matter where you install it from, it will just update itself from their website. But installing from a .deb/USC is required IIRC to get the status symbols to show in the File Browser.

Thanks Glorfindel. That makes sense. I'll explore the browser preferences. Not sure where I would look for the Shutter default though. I right clicked on it and there was nothing about where the default download was. I'll keep exploring.

Okay. I switched computers. Now my old off-line computer still has Copy and Dropbox on it. When whoever might find this old computer puts it online is he going to have access to my Dropbox and Copy folders?

And if so, what should I do to stop that from happening?
