Is the Earl the only product this company is making, or do they make other things, too? This must be costing them a fortune - I'm wondering how long they can afford to keep going with it.

I'm obviously failing to express myself clearly. Let me try again:

Does this company have any source of revenue other than their crowd-funding to allow them to go on spending money for year after year in this way without going broke? They must be spending a fortune with no sales to bring them any income. They can't carry on doing that indefinitely.

Not that I am aware of. It is a crowd funded startup with only a few guys. They hope to design variations on this product. The funding they got initially is substantial but they will run out eventually.

Well, this update causes me to "pull the plug" on the project.

What I wanted to get was a ruggedized e-ink ebook reader, with map capabilities, plus whatever "Swiss Army Knife" features I could get.

At 4.7" (12 cm), the primary purpose fails. The extras are not enough to sell it to me.

Are there any decently built, Epub reading, front lit screened, folder accepting, E-book readers (Liseuses) with decent firmware out there?

Easily. I have a handheld GPS system aimed at hikers, which has a 3.5" screen, and the maps are fine. What may be more significant is that maps make heavy use of colour to convey information. I don't know how well a map would work on a grey-scale screen!

Please let me know if you find one.

I'm not pulling the plug, mostly because I need a GPS system for hunting, and I've already paid for EARL, but man, I'm not happy with the 4.7" screen. I won't use EARL as a dedicated reader on a small screen like that, I've tried on my wife's PRS-350, and I just can't get used to it.

Admittedly, I've not had a newer GPS system, but old school topo maps in B&W are just fine to read. My old Magellan 400 handheld was greyscale, and it just made use of stipling rather than colour to show bodies of water and topographical differences.

The standard maps used in the UK are called "Ordnance Survey" maps, and they are extremely colour-intensive:



On a grey-scale screen it could be difficult to distinguish rivers from contour lines, for example.
