I do like the Dresden Files books, but do I think they are worthy of a Hugo? I don't think they are worthy of a Hugo. What's happened is that these pathetic puppies have insulted these authors they put on their lists. They are making fun of them big time.

Hugos used to be benchmark books, memorable books that stood out among the crowd and had a chance to endure.
Now we get political treatises, jokes, and "book 15 in the ongoing saga". Or a whole 20 year old saga.

Personally, I would rather they put the puppy to sleep once and for all.

I agree with the entirety of your first and second paragraph.

But not the third?

Why prolong the soap opera?
We have a system designed to cope with a volume of maybe a hundred new books a year faced with more new books than voters and where over half the titles get no consideration from the voters simply because they don't come from a "name" house.
And then there is the diversification of the genre, which ranges from the classics like space opera to alternate history and superhero adventures, epic fantasies to urban fables.

The whole idea of a "best" novel has outlived its usefulness.

Put the Hugos out of our misery.

It's now gotten to the point where author's are better off not winning a Hugo than they are winning.

I stopped paying attention to the Hugo award when Redshirts won best novel. This year looks amazingly awful.

I did enjoy Redhirts. But I didn't think it was award worthy.

The best novel can possibly be salvaged if Ancillary Sword by Ann Leckie wins. It was not on the two different sick puppies lists and it is the only book in the list of best novels that deserves an award.

I nominated this year. I think the only two items I nominated that have made the shortlist are Guardians of the Galaxy and The Lego Movie.

I agree, didn't mean to imply otherwise.....the ones I 'recognize' are the 'good guys' is all I'm saying.....and it's not like I'm completely clueless in the SF&F field.

And while Kevin J. Anderson is a good writer, he's also a hack IMO.

Whaaaaaaaaat? I love every Iain Banks book (other than the first Culture one, which was terrible). Use of Weapons is one of my favorite sf books.

I suggest Peter F. Hamilton , Alastair Reynolds, and Karl Schroeder to anyone looking to read some good sci-if.

Read all five did you?
I'd discourage anyone from prejudging The Goblin Emperor.

But of course we must listen to Jon as his taste are the best. And I loved Use of Weapons also.

The only one I haven't read yet is Ancillary Sword, but really liked Ancillary Justice and The Goblin Emperor was very good.
