I had to go out about 5 minutes earlier than usual this morning and remove all the ice from the car windows. And I did NOT like that!

 WELCOME TO TEXAS

Climate disaster here. The weather forcast here had said 4 C for a low. Planned on leaving the plants out (12 Tropical hibiscus, 6 Orange trees, and a plumeria.) Forgot to check the forcast at 9 PM local time. At 8:45 PM it was 23 C. Blue Norther hit, and the temperature pistoned down 20 C in two hours. Hit Freezing at 2:00 AM. My brother got up at 4:00 AM, it was -2 C. He madly hauled in the plants into the garage, and turned in the grow lights. It's -3 C outside right now and dropping. High today expected to be +1 C down from +5 C. It'll take at least 24 hrs, to get a full feel for the damage. The Oranges are probably OK, as they can take a short burst down to -2 to -3. Might lose the fruit. No bets on the Hibiscii or the plumeria.... |

It's an old Texas joke that Chili powder (a fiery seasoning) is made when a Howling Blue Norther hit the campfires and froze them. The cowboys gathered up the frozen fires and ground them up into Chili powder...

I had a frost damaged hibiscus last year. I would´n trim it now, but mulch, mulch, mulch, and trim in spring. I´m not a real expert though. It´s 1:48 pm, high time for lunch. 4 C outside and the sun´s shining

It's our unique geography. High mountains on the west side act as a funnel for artic air flowing down from the polar regions, with flat plains all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico. At the same time, The Gulf of Mexico is only 500 KM away, with a water temp varying from 30-32 C summer to 10-15 in winter. To top it off, to the southwest, is the Mexican desert, which is 25-30 C this time of year (40 + in the summer). So which way is the wind blowing? From the gulf, highs around 20 C, lows around 10 C and moist. From the Mexican desert, 25-30 C with near 0 C at night, and very dry. From the West, over the mountains, off the Pacific, high winds and modest cold, due to compression heating as the air falls down from the mountain peaks, 10 C for highs and near 0 C for lows, and 50-70 KM winds. And then there is the Howling Blue Northers (They really look blue as the cold air/cloud mix comes roaring down.), highs around 0 C and lows - well, dial a number. In the great freeze of Christmas 1983, in San Antonio (which is 500 KM South of where I live now) it spend 72 hours at -9 C. Welcome to Texas. |
