Business Insider: HC to pull out of Amazon - Page 3

I found a free sampler so I set up an actual account and "bought" it. There is indeed a download button below all the stuff about using their app and about the Adobe download that says "Download eBook for Kindle e-ink devices" (see screen shot) which did give me a Mobi file.

Wonder what they're using to create the mobi files? It can't be Kindlegen. What does Baen use?

Did you watch the video on the bottom right? For downloading to your pc it tells you to enter Harper Collins as the ebook vendor in ADE. Is it just the newer ADE versions that have ebook vendor? Can you have ADE used for multiple vendors?

I started too and stopped when the download page & stuff didn't look the same and I saw how old the video was. No idea about the vendor thing I use ADE 2 and have never seen it.

Where you need iOS or Android to read them because you need to use their app to read them. This is a major step backwards.

If you go to any book product page and select e-book format, it will say "Purchase this e-book and read on the HC Reader App ..." Click "HC Reader App" and a pop-up will appear. If you read this thread you'll see that you can download a DRM'd ePub or DRM-Free Mobi as well, you don't need their app.

@AnemicOak and @Purple Lady -- thanks for testing this out!

Are you able to download in multiple formats (mobi + epub) or does the first format you download end up being the only format you can get?

If HC sets their server to work with only new DRM, then you won't be able to use ADE 2. You'll be forced to upgrade to ADE 3 or 4 in order to download your ebook. But that's a pretty hardcore move. You can use ADE 2 to download. I downloaded a free eBook n problem using ADE. Since I can strip the DRM and have a better format, there's no need to bother trying to get a DRM free Mobi.

Not all books are available in .mobi format, though. I got this one, and it's only available as DRM'd epub or through their app. http://www.harpercollins.com/9780062...thriller-books

Not exactly. Adobe has developed a new "hardened" DRM that has not been broken.

Right now the new DRM is optional. Vendors can choose:

Stick with old DRM -- compatible with ADE 1, 2, 3, 4
Use both old and new DRM -- customers with ADE 1-2 receive old DRM, customers with ADE 3-4 receive new DRM
Use only new DRM -- only works with ADE 3-4; customers with ADE 1-2 required to upgrade

As far as I'm aware, no vendor is using the new DRM (yet).

It appears there is no way to tell ahead of time if the DRM free file is an option either.
