I can confirm that I have just Whispersync'd a couple of personal docs, moving through them on one device, and being prompted to go to the last page read, when starting to read them on another device.

I have not received any email from Amazon, and am not a Prime member.

I don't know if being in Australia has any bearing on the matter.

I user Whispersync frequently, and could not readily duplicate this feature with any other service or external hard drive I have access to.

I must acknowledge that if Amazon DO get around to my account, despite a degree of irritation, I shall hand over my $US12, to keep the Whispersync feature.

Nobody has suggested that "send to Kindle" is going to stop working or to incur a charge. What probably will stop working (unless you sign up for a Cloud storage plan) is those sent documents being stored in the Cloud as well as being sent to a Kindle device.
She also said that there was NO Change to how Whispersync works, and I SPECIFICALLY asked her if I would be able to use the Send to Kindle app to send Kindle docs to the cloud, and if whispersync would work for those personal docs. She said yes.

Thanks for the additional information. It'll be interesting to see how it all works out.

Ok. To put this to bed once and for all, I just registered my paperwhite to a new kindle account, no prime, and I did not accept a trial for Amazon Drive. I then checked to make sure that Archiving of personal documents was enabled in my settings, and sent a document to the Kindle by email. The document arrived with no issue, and I was able to remove it from my Kindle and put it into the Cloud. I then tried registering the Send to Kindle app with the new account info, and used it to send a different document directly to my cloud, without sending it to my Kindle at all. It worked. Both documents show on the cloud tab on my Kindle, and under "Docs" in my account on Amazon.

Is that enough proof? If you don't believe me, you can try the same thing yourself.

Shari,

Nobody's doubting that this is the way it's working at the moment, but it may change in the future. We'll all just have to wait and see. I don't think anyone disbelieves you - I certainly don't.

And Amazon could decide to charge US$100 per gigabyte per month, at some point in the future.

You have no point.

Personally I think that free personal document storage is going to disappear, but I may be wrong. We'll have to wait and see.

I disagree with you, since I was told by Amazon directly that this was NOT the case.

That's fine. I'm not asking anyone to agree with me. Just stating my personal opinion, which may well be wrong.

Nothing will change now, Amazon have said everyone is on three month trial. It's what happens in three months that is in dispute

Actually, when I registered my Kindle to the new account I made a point of NOT accepting the 3 month trial, and I was still able to use both email and the Send to Kindle app to send documents to my Kindle cloud.

I"m not on the three month trial either. I can use sendtokindle (I am not emailing a file, I am using the send to kindle button Amazon supplies for posts/stories). This goes to my kindle and is not stored on the cloud. I'm okay with that. I have not tried to store it on the cloud.

Of course, if anyone uses SendToKindle from a blog or to get a story, they would be well-advised to save their own copy in case it doesn't store to the cloud or the rules change again if that post/story might go away from the original source. But this is not really new. We all have to backup things we have bought or would like to keep. This sort of change just brings that point home.

Also some of the confusion about emailing/converting documents appears to be happening because it didn't work for some people first try yesterday. It does now appear the "email" send to kindle does still work and won't count as "cloud storage" that will incur a charge.

Meanwhile, I ran backups this morning. It's my regular weekly backup, but it just feels especially good to have a backup this morning.

I'm with HarryT on this one. These emails and plans definitely indicate something could change with the way Amazon stores cloud books very soon. There's no reason to be pessimistic, but there's plenty of evidence to support HarryT's theories.

I'm not horribly pleased about the possible move, but I'm going to start making sure anything I have in the cloud is backed up elsewhere.
