From what I can tell, you can email stuff to your DEVICE -- but you cannot store things in the cloud for free unless you have Prime or pay for the service.

The note when I logged in to see if it was going to auto-sign me up said it would charge me IF I stored anything from this point on.

Also, from checking with friends, if you have prime, you won't get an email (no one I know has gotten an email that has prime. Yet.)

Are you sure? I don't think I'd bet on that. Sending stuff to your kindle via its special email address was around long before they started letting you save personal documents "in the cloud."

I suspect the mailing feature to continue as it did--just without the archiving to cloud part.

At the very least, I'd expect a separate email/announcement that the emailing feature (and my kindle's email address) was going away.

Can't speak to the UK--but the notice when I was logged in to check my account/files mentioned that if you have prime, you're basically not affected--well, I updated this below because there is a bit of a change. Okay from other posters, updated to add: PRIME is affected in that they can have unlimited photos but only 5GB storage included for OTHER things like video and I assume documents/backup/music.

Nope.. I've got Prime and received the email this morning. Don't use the storage much, but my Fire Phone backs up all the photos and I find that very useful.

It isn't fair to put it mildly. Some of us have limited incomes and another bill just to access what we were given in the 1st place isn't at all fair. It's $11.99/year for 5GB and $59.99 a year for unlimited space. At the least they could expand the $11.99/year to 20 GB I would think. They already charge for music files that are greater than 250 in number. The only nice thing is that it doesn't start charging til 3 months have gone by (free trial).

Eh, Amazon doesn't owe you anything. It's a business decision and you're free to take your business elsewhere. You might deplore the decision, regret the change, even think it'll be bad for Amazon's business, but I don't see how you can call it unfair. Did Amazon promise free storage in perpetuity and renege?

I don't save photos at all but I do use the Cloud for personal documents. I have about 390+ stored and that's probably going to go up. I read on both my Voyage and my HDX so I need the Cloud as I have a couple of thousand non Amazon bought books.

I don't think that's true. Personal docs worked just fine before they added cloud storage of the docs, no reason why it shouldn't still work, just no cloud storage of docs.

FYI: The SendToKindle feature worked for me.

The file is on my Kindle, but not in the cloud.

I strongly suspect that it won't sync between devices if it's not in the Cloud, though, and that's one of the main benefits of personal docs.
