In the 90s my folks went on a vacation in Europe. Prior to leaving my Dad called his bank to check on the locations of ATMs they might be able to use.

He asked the agent if there were any ATMs in Florence. The agent said, "No."

He asked the agent if there were any ATMs in Venice. The agent said, "No."

He asked the agent if there were any ATMs in Rome. The agent said, "No." But then the agent said, "But we do have several in Roma."

"Okay," my Dad said. "Now, how about Firenze? And Venezia?"

Turned out there were lots of ATMs.

A vendor at a stall in Disneyland asked me where I was from and when I replied "England" she asked me if that was near Milan (well, comparatively, I suppose ).

On the other hand, an English travel agent told me a couple of years ago that it was impossible to drive from Vancouver to Calgary in a week because one was on the east coast of Canada and the other on the west!

I can understand people not knowing were Andorra is. Or on which continent Suriname is located. I can appreciate that most folks don't know that the principle export item from Lichtenstein is false teeth. I can also appreciate the fact that I'm the sort of person who always want to know what's just over the next hill, and can't rest until I get there and learn all about what it has to offer, so perhaps my knowledge of Geography is a bit better than average.

Most folks learn their Geography when they travel, rather than when in the classroom. Add to that the fact that most Americans never travel more than 200 miles from the place of their birth unless they have been in the Military. But for an American to not know that New Mexico is part of the USA, or someone not know that Thailand is a country unto itself is absurd. Some teacher(s) somewhere are falling down on the job!

I'm heartbroken this morning. My mom's little kitty, Ming, who was also my kitty, especially for the last 4 years, died suddenly. She woke my mom up with horribly yowling and was lethargic. Mom took her to the emergency vet, where she was horribly anemic. She died when they tried a blood transfusion. Vet thought it was an embolism. It was so sudden and shocking. Just Wednesday night, she was all over my cousin's husband when he came to get his cat-sitting orders. I am also very worried that this is something that could happen to my Cinder. They were eating the same food, etc. What it is not an embolism but bad food? Cinder seems okay so far, though.

I'm so sorry to hear about Ming. You may want to do an Internet search to see if anyone else's experienced sudden death after eating that particular brand. It seems there's been quite a few tainted dog and cat food brands the last few years. I don't know if it's because of carelessness, ingredient substitution to save on manufacturing costs, or just plain bad luck, but such stories seem more and more frequent these days.

So much so that some of the big box pet stores have stopped selling food and treats manufactured in China.

For sure, WT. I spoke with the Vet with a clearer head than Mom did at 2:30am . Poor little Ming cat had that paralysis of the hind legs, so the Vet feels it is pretty certain. I'm taking Cinder in for a quick look tomorrow morning even so.
