Love the Kindle dictionary feature. When reading books from the early 1900's, there are many words that aren't in use anymore. Usually I can tell from how a word is used in a sentence what it means. Not so much with early works.

From Latin- pulchra, meaning beautiful. Don't know why a whole bunch of letter at the end..

Isn't it a pretty word? I believe that it and 'rhythm' are the longest English words without vowels. And I like z's.

"Y" can be either a vowel or a consonant - it's a consonant in "yoke" and "you"- but all the "y"s here in these 2 words are vowels (functioning just like "i" or "ee," rather than initiating a syllable). If it's got consonants (or consonant sounds) on either side of it, it's a vowel.
