If a good thing is used as the carrier for a bad thing, does that make good things less good? No.

If updates were manual only, the vast majority of all devices of every type would never be updated... that would give all those people below-par experiences.

A totally separate point is that knowledgeable people should be able to control what is on their device through non-default means.

The masses, however, should not be allowed to stay on outdated software Google/Mozilla have learnt and taught that lesson well. So has the average Windows antivirus. Microsoft has a reputation of being a little overeager in that regard (force-restarting while you do work) but that does not negate the validity of their starting POV.

There's a big difference between auto update with no choice and the update currently in my notification bar. The one in my notification bar can be ignored if I don't want it. An auto update on Android or Fire OS goes whether you want it or not, and whenever it wants to, not when it's convenient for you.

That is incorrect - you can in the Group Policy Editor enable or disable whether you get an auto boot or not after an AutoUpdate.

That topic again? Only for windows (which is the topic here): auto updates make sense as a default. But you can and could ever customize it to your liking up to never (which is a bad idea). There is no evidence whatsoever that this will be changing.

I have never had an Android device that automatically updated. It auto downloads OTA updates, but never have I seen it automatically start the update without user input. Kindle Fire's might, but then that's Amazon's Android flavor. You can't generalize all of Android when it's just the flavor that Amazon puts out.

I had an Android device that did that once. It may have been Motorola years ago, but you're right that most don't. That's when I learned how to root to prevent that from happening again.

The upgrade to the pirate editions is indeed because of security issues, to fight botnets and such. It does not render pirate editions legit:

As Microsoft describes the situation, you'll see frequent messages warning you that your copy of Windows may not be genuine. Your desktop will turn to black. You can reset it, but it will continue to turn black until you activate Windows. You can still get critical security updates, though you may not be able to get optional updates or other software, such as Microsoft Security Essentials. But otherwise, Windows and your applications will still be able to function.
