Set it up so the Desktop is displayed by default.

You will be updated to win 10 even if you are using a pirated copy of win 7 and above. That to me is a really bold move by Microsoft.

For people who purchased Windows 7, I agree.

On the other hand, for pirates, it's Microsoft's product so it's Microsoft's terms. They are offering those people a get out of lawsuits free card (for at least one product), so I would hope they take advantage of it.

Has there ever been a compulsory upgrade for Windows? I know Amazon pulls that kind of crap - upgrading automatically without even asking. Does any other OS do that?

If Windows upgrades were compulsory, there wouldn't be millions still running XP.

Google ChromeOS does that. Although in developer mode or via Google Apps admin console, you can disable that. Likewise, in *cough* developer mode on your Kindle, you can disable auto updates.

Auto-updated software isn't unheard of. Generally, in cases where the risk of people getting burned doing things they were never authorized to do is considered less risky than allowing people to get left behind with buggy software.

Amazon doesn't want to worry users with manual updates. Kobo does the same. In fact, I would be surprised if any embedded device ereaders didn't auto update -- though Amazon blocking manual downgrades is new.

In the world of desktop software, browsers usually auto update. In that case, you would be well advised to not complain -- they are saving your bacon, major time.

To be clear -- auto updates are often a good thing, and a wise move that benefits everyone. I approve greatly.
Stopping the user from manually downgrading and sticking with something they prefer is a dirty move.

Auto updates are not good. I don't know how many times I've seen at xda when a new version of a phone OS comes out and the flash happy people flash it and then brick their phone by trying to downgrade. That means when non flash happy people are automatically updated, they can't downgrade. You can't say that auto updates are good when it's common to prevent people from downgrading.

I also remember back in the old days when I had a Garmin gps it would start an upgrade while you were using it to navigate. You couldn't stop the update which meant you also couldn't use it to navigate.

Whatever. People who manually install firmware are expected to be big boys and take responsibility for their actions, which includes knowing what they are doing.

Your point?

So Garmin has no idea how to implement an update scheduler, and they make inferior products? OK -- but that doesn't mean auto-updates are inherently bad.

I know that flash happy people have take responsibility for their actions. My point was when I said "You can't say that auto updates are good when it's common to prevent people from downgrading." You said previously that preventing downgrading was bad, but if preventing downgrading happens frequently that also makes auto updating bad. You said auto updating was good.

The Garmin comment was just another example of bad auto updates from a long time ago - auto updates have always had problems.

PocketBooks do not auto-update. That is the default setting. Which is great, because the new version of firmware 5.xy is horrible when compared to 4.xy (which is, again, markedly worse than even older versions were).
And if you do [auto]update, the manufacturer hosts previous firmware versions on their site and lets you downgrade. Which is great, because the new version of firmware ... ;-)
