For people who purchased Windows 7, I agree.
On the other hand, for pirates, it's Microsoft's product so it's Microsoft's terms. They are offering those people a get out of lawsuits free card (for at least one product), so I would hope they take advantage of it. |

If Windows upgrades were compulsory, there wouldn't be millions still running XP.

Auto-updated software isn't unheard of. Generally, in cases where the risk of people getting burned doing things they were never authorized to do is considered less risky than allowing people to get left behind with buggy software. Amazon doesn't want to worry users with manual updates. Kobo does the same. In fact, I would be surprised if any embedded device ereaders ![]() In the world of desktop software, browsers usually auto update. In that case, you would be well advised to not complain -- they are saving your bacon, major time. ![]() ![]() To be clear -- auto updates are often a good thing, and a wise move that benefits everyone. I approve greatly. Stopping the user from manually downgrading and sticking with something they prefer is a dirty move. Last edited by eschwartz; 03-19-2015 at 11:30 PM. |

I also remember back in the old days when I had a Garmin gps it would start an upgrade while you were using it to navigate. You couldn't stop the update which meant you also couldn't use it to navigate. ![]() |

The Garmin comment was just another example of bad auto updates from a long time ago - auto updates have always had problems. |

And if you do [auto]update, the manufacturer hosts previous firmware versions on their site and lets you downgrade. Which is great, because the new version of firmware ... ;-) |
