Thanks for looking into this some more. That explains why only some people were having issues unlocking books that weren't from Nookstudy.

Is it possible that Nookstudy for Mac is still using a credit card based key?

PC Nookstudy and Nook for PC both store their books in the same folder. I use Nook for PC to download (because it automatically downloads any new books). Then when I open Nookstudy, it sees those books as local files and can open them. Sounds like that wouldn't be the case for the Mac versions.

Yes, if you're on a Mac, the NookStudy key won't work with anything else, giving the impression that there are different keys for different download methods, when in fact it's just a different key for NookStudy; all other download methods appear to share the same key.

No, I checked. The cc-based key is different.

You are correct. The Mac versions also share a folder, but books downloaded via NookStudy won't open in Nook for Mac and vice versa.

How odd. Seems like it's just a glitch that was probably always there, but we never had any reason to discover it, until now. The fact that two programs use the same folder yet still need to download their own differently encrypted files definitely sounds like a mistake.

"Nobody you know" came back to Alf's blog and explained that the url he provided is based on the way that Nook for PC gets the key. So that will be very useful for Mac and Linux users or anyone who doesn't want to mess around with installing Nookstudy.

I haven't tried apprentice harpers 6.2 tools yet, but I need to unlock a book I just bought that needs a different ignoble key.

I recently added a sample eBook to my B&N library and when I use the greasemonkey alternate download link, I get OPPS!. But when I use that link on previous eBooks it works. So I think B&N is really screwing with us even more now.

I got my new key using the "url method." It worked OK the one time I used it (for exploratory purposes only). But my plan is to just not buy from B&N unless I simply can't buy the book anywhere else. Tampermonkey scripts and/or Nook Study (or other discontinued software) combined with url-retrievable encryption hashes all just feels a bit too fragile for my comfort.

If their supported apps can retrieve encryption hashes via url, there's no reason they can't start changing those hashes every other day—or discontinuing hashes for unsupported PC or Mac type programs altogether. Meaning people would be reduced to rooting Nook/Android devices to retrieve files and sniffing network packets to discover the "hash o' the day." No thanks.

Is the sample eBook an enhanced edition, comic, or PagePerfect edition? I don't think I've ever been able to download them from a browser, just the Android app (or Nook tablet).

I have not bought a book from B & N since they implemented this change. And I have a Nook HD+. I used to buy from B & N first if the price was the same as others. Now I do not even use their web site.

It is not. Maybe it's just that sample eBook. I just added another sample to my library and it will download.

Yep. My position also. I made sure that all previous purchase were archived and I haven't been back. There's nothing in their catalog that I can't find somewhere else. Their loss, not mine.

And me. I love my NOOK Simple Touch. They lost me when they cut out the SD card. I worked hard building my library; now I can't move it to a new machine? Then the DRM business. B&N can just go pound sand. Maybe they will sell enough legos to stay in business.

Same here, as soon as they included me in their new schema. I will now try and have them remove my account with them, including any books and all personal or payment data. I don't trust them to be able to keep my data secure, if this is how they run their business.

Luck;
Ken

To those of you no longer buying ebooks at BN, who's getting your business instead?

I've switched most of my ebook-buying to Amazon, which is a major shift as I used to avoid them like the plague.

I buy quite a bit from Amazon, and Smashwords. And I borrow quite a bit from 2 libraries.
