A Passage of Stars by Kate Elliott is $2.99 today from Open Road Media

In the crackling first book of Kate Elliott’s Highroad trilogy, strong-spirited Lily Ransome leaves her home planet—and the life she’s always known—to rescue an abducted friend

Willful as well as physically brave, Lily Ransome is dissatisfied by the options available to her on Unruli: She can either join her family’s lucrative mining business or begin procreating. When Heredes, her beloved martial arts instructor, tutor, and father figure, is kidnapped by alien bounty hunters, Lily spurns the expectations of her home planet and ventures into space to find him. Befriending a persecuted minority class of humans called the Ridani, she becomes involved in an intergalactic rebellion and finds love in an unexpected place—as well as true strength within herself.
A Passage of Stars is the first book of the Highroad trilogy, which continues with Revolution’s Shore and The Price of Ransom.

Do you recommend this book? Just asking-- I have too many on my TBR as it is, but the plot sounds intriguing... if it is well-implemented.

I haven't read this book, I've just bought it myself, but I really liked her Jaran series and several other books she has written. So although I wasn't as great a fan of her crown of stars series at this price I'm willing to give it a try even though it is one of the first books she wrote.

Free from the author via KDP Select @ Amazon:

The Concentrated Essence of Any Number of Ravens by New Zealand-resident Welsh expat author Chris Bell (ISFDB, Wikipedia), a collection of his mostly sfnal flash fiction stories, with an introduction by fellow New Zealand author Chad Taylor (ISFDB, Wikipedia).

Do you like to read your fiction in small packages? If so, there may be a space in your electronic library for ‘The Concentrated Essence of Any Number of Ravens’.

Did you know that Sara Bernhardt’s right leg enjoyed a brief but successful solo career following amputation? Or that Hermann Göring was reincarnated as a stainless steel saucepan?

These very short stories create a patchwork of intricate and potentially disturbing themes: a disintegrating rock band, public transport, kindness, cars, books, libraries, the fall of the Berlin Wall, crime and punishment, the Arab Spring, digital alienation, misanthropic barmen and matchbox collecting.

Humour, history, magical-surrealism, sci-fi, pastiche, romance, gothic fantasy, social commentary and a cast of offbeat characters who might have escaped with the beat of black wings from the author’s library, ‘The Concentrated Essence of Any Number of Ravens’ is unconventionality at its most readable.

Free again from the author('s republishing consortium) via KDP Select @ Amazon:

Venom by Rob Swigart (ISFDB, Wikipedia FR), 3rd in his Chazz Koenig/Thriller in Paradise series of Hawaii-set bio-medical techno-thrillers starring the eponymous biologist and his Hawaiian detective buddy, originally out from St. Martin's Press in 1991.

EVERY COP'S WORST NIGHTMARE...

As darkness gathers above the gorgeous Hawaiian island of Kauai, a small ship drifts into harbor, unpowered and in danger of running aground. On board are seven bodies. Lieutenant Cobb Takamura soon traces the death ship's route and the cause of death to an exotic venom. As he navigates the tricky waters of international politics, biologist Chazz Koenig tries to isolate the poison. But they can't stop two more women from being brutally murdered. A killer is loose in the island paradise, and as he assumes various guises he moves closer to the families of the men who pursue him.

There haven't been many new SF&F titles that I've been interested in for the past several weeks so I'm starting to go through withdrawals. I came across this pre-order from Orbit from a new (to me, at least) author and now that Amazon and Kobo have dropped the pre-order price from $8.99 to $2.99, I went for it. For that price, I'm willing to take a chance.

It appears that it's also discounted to CA$2.99 and £2.99 so I'm guessing that it's a publisher discount and will likely be price-matched elsewhere eventually.

The Lazarus War: Artefact by Jamie Sawyer (The Lazarus War #1)
Orbit (March 24, 2015) $2.99, CA$2.99 and £2.99

Quote:
Artefact is book one of The Lazarus War - an explosive new space adventure series from one of the brightest new stars in science fiction.

Mankind has spread to the stars, only to become locked in warfare with an insidious alien race. All that stands against the alien menace are the soldiers of the Simulant Operation Program, an elite military team remotely operating avatars in the most dangerous theatres of war.

Captain Conrad Harris has died hundreds of times - running suicide missions in simulant bodies. Known as Lazarus, he is a man addicted to death. So when a secret research station deep in alien territory suddenly goes dark, there is no other man who could possibly lead a rescue mission.

But Harris hasn't been trained for what he's about to find. And this time, he may not be coming back . . .

For fans of The Edge of Tomorrow, Alien and James S. A. Corey's Expanse series comes this brand new action novel set in space that will thrill science fiction fans worldwide.

Jack Campbell, author of the Lost Fleet novels calls it: "a gripping read that moves at warp speed."
