Murder at Volcano House by Chip Hughes, 4th in his Surfing Detective mystery series set in Hawaii. This is a self-published contination of a series whose first two novels were published by Hawaiian local interest specialty publisher Island Heritage Press and were previously freebied, so if you liked those, you might want to also try this.

Kai Cooke comes to the Volcano House for his strangest case yet—protecting the CEO of a geothermal venture from the wrath of Pele, legendary goddess of volcanoes. Rex Ransom is here in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park to attend the funeral for his second employee to die mysteriously in Pele’s domain. His wife sees a pattern and fears that Rex, having offended Pele by drilling in her sacred rainforest, is next. Kai is not so sure. But his faith in common sense receives a jolt when Ransom turns up in a steam vent, boiled alive. Kai investigates and finds others besides Pele who might want Ransom dead. An ex-wife, a former business partner, an anti-drilling activist, a loony woman who fancies herself Pele’s sister, and more. Did the goddess herself strike down Ransom? Or is the answer closer to home? A quick-paced, vivid, island-hopping ride, Murder at Volcano House gives fans of the Surfing Detective reason to cheer, and fans of Hawai'i—who is not?—a welcome journey to these storied isles.

Phone Kitten by Marika Christian, a humorous chick-lit-ish cozy mystery with f/m romantic elements.

Shy, funny, loveable Emily’s a pretty unlikely candidate for a phone sex operator. She’d die if she had to talk dirty face-to-face—especially to her hot cop boyfriend. She sure didn’t set out to do phone sex—she wanted to be a writer. But when her BFF framed her for plagiarism, she got in a tiny financial hole and saw this ad for a “phone actresses”…

Hey, it’s not nearly as bad as it sounds. No pantyhose or pantsuits, no regular hours, you’re your own boss, and lots of people to talk to. Guys, that is. But here’s the odd thing—lots of them want to talk about more than Emily’s imagined attributes; they start to think of her as the best friend they’ll never have to meet. Next thing you know, one of her customers gets killed. What’s a phone kitten to do? Solve the murder herself, of course!

The Amazon Gold Box Deal of the Day for March 14th is for 30+ "Bone-Chilling $1.99 Mysteries on Kindle", mainly promoted self-pub/backlist reprints via one or other of the Amazon-exclusive imprints, but it does include some decent stuff by previously-published authors, prices good in at least Canada & the US for the books I spot-checked.

I myself will be picking up Aaron (SYKM, Wikipedia) & Charlotte Elkins' Alix London series of mystery novels starring the eponymous art restorer, having greatly enjoyed Elkins' Edgar Award-winning Gideon Oliver, Intrepid Globe-Trotting Forensic Anthropologist series which I bought way back when from Fictionwise, and having also mildly enjoyed his Chris Norgren, Intrepid Globe-Trotting Art Forgery Detection Expert (also a Fictionwise buy), and having bought but not yet read the 1st Alix London anyway during a 99 cent sale way back when as well.

Convenient linkage for the lot in order:
  1. A Dangerous Talent
  2. A Cruise to Die For
  3. The Art Whisperer

For Whom Death Tolls is the third in the Manor House series by Kate Kingsbury, featuring Lady Elizabeth Hartleigh Compton.

It's $1.99 for about 2 more days on US Kindle Countdown deal before going up to $2.99, and then presumably back to $3.99 at some time beyond that.

link: http://www.amazon.com/Death-Tolls-Ma...dp/B00JJ84N52/
Spoiler:
Quote:
Enthralling mystery, lots of laughter and a little bit of romance – that’s village life in wartime England….

Left with only a muddle-headed butler, a bossy cook/housekeeper and a couple of energetic maids, Lady Elizabeth Hartleigh Compton has enough problems on her hands. Not only is she struggling to upkeep the sprawling Manor House and vast acres she inherited, she must also take care of her numerous tenants, while coping with the inconveniences and sacrifices of wartime England. Fortunately Sitting Marsh is far removed from the bombing going on in London and other cities. That doesn’t mean that peace prevails in the tiny village. There’s the handsome American major who takes over the Manor House for officers’ quarters, and the group of belligerent housewives determined to take on the German invaders, not to mention a murder or two…

Lovers of Agatha Christie’s books will find much to enjoy in this tale of intrigue and laughter in an English village, and Emily Brightwell fans will fall in love with the offbeat characters of Sitting Marsh.

FOR WHOM DEATH TOLLS
Lady Elizabeth is horrified when the body of an American airman is found hanging from a bell rope in the church tower. As always, our intrepid sleuth is hot on the trail, but a missed clue and a formidable killer may very well cost her life.

Amazon Aus Deal of the Day is Maureen Jennings:

Except the Dying
$1.25

blurb:
Spoiler:
Toronto, February 1895. When the body of a young woman is found naked and frozen in a quiet laneway, Acting Detective William Murdoch, driven by pity for the dead girl and the desire to secure his promotion, is determined to pursue every lead and reveal the truth.

Though influential people bring pressure to bear on the police to solve the mystery quickly, when the body is eventually identified it soon becomes clear that many of those connected with the girl’s life have secrets to hide.

Murdoch must use every detective skill he possesses and his understanding of human nature to untangle the case before more lives are lost.

The other Amazon sites don't appear to have this ebook discounted.

Kobo prices aren't discounted either.

This ebook looks very interesting, and the series of books were made into a tele series in Canada from what I gather.

Quite frankly we don't get enough Canadian authors selling into Aus, nor being available at my Library.

Cold Fear by Canadian Arthur Ellis Award-winner Rick Mofina (SYKM), 2nd in his Tom Reed & Walt Sydowski series of mystery/crime thrillers set in San Francisco, this installment itself a 2001 Arthur Ellis Award finalist for Best Novel, originally out from Kensington's Pinnacle imprint in 2001.

A multi-agency task force launches a massive search as Paige fights to survive in the wilderness. Time hammers against her and soon the nation is gripped by the life-and-death drama.

Secretly, behind the scenes, the FBI grows suspicious of Paige’s parents. Their recent history and disturbing evidence links them to a horrible secret from the past.

More Endeavour Press US Kindle Countdown deals, all at $0.99 before returning to $0.99. Some new to me, some repeats.

The Lily-white Boys is the ninth in the Inspector David Webb series by Anthea Fraser. It's on countdown for about 2 more days.
link: http://www.amazon.com/Lily-white-Boy...dp/B00Q8KY0R0/
Spoiler:
Quote:
When a disreputable van is dumped outside her house, Monica Tovey is unnerved.

As its gruesome contents are revealed, a frightening chain of events is set in motion which seems to threaten her life...

DCI Webb finds that murder trails in its wake a net of incongruities — burglary, football hooligans, low-flying aircraft and mysterious phone calls.

Can he unscramble the clues to find the murderer and the truth about his two renowned victims?

As usual, his inquiries take him from humble cottages to sumptuous houses as he seeks to dig beneath the evasions, hesitations and denials with which his questions are met.

Can he find the killer amongst the web of deceit and shifty lives of the locals?

By the time he has the answer, Monica's life and those of her family and friends have been turned upside down, never again to be the same.

And at the root of it all lie the two they called The Lily-White Boys…

ANTHEA FRASER has written all her life but did not begin to take it seriously until after marriage, when she found herself at home with two small daughters and embarked on a correspondence course with the London School of Journalism. She wrote short stories before turning to novels of the supernatural, and then to crime.

Praise for Anthea Fraser's books:

‘Anthea Fraser is a worthy follower of the traditional whodunit system...The plot is sustained throughout, and her artistic detective who literally "draws conclusions" is an original character.' - Sunderland Echo

'A well-mannered, well-plotted and well-told story' - Birmingham Post

'The book is a pleasure to read and savour' - Woman Journalist

'Irresistible, all-too-human story' - Dread Review of Mystery

'A well-structured book, with good balance between depiction of character and development of plot' - Criminologist

'Sympathetic, well-executed book, in which full attention is paid to human feelings and failings' - Yorkshire Post

A Little Learning is the sixth in the Detective Inspector Percy Peach/Detective Sergeant Lucy Blake series by JM Gregson. It's on countdown for about 3 more days.
link: http://www.amazon.com/Little-Learnin...dp/B00QKEIIKO/
Spoiler:
Quote:
One weekend in November, two students at the University of East Lancashire are at a loose end.

After having one drink too many, the idea of committing the Perfect Crime comes up in casual conversation.

But the idea is already fully-formed in the mind of one of them, Paul Barnes.

‘Claptrap’ Carter, the director of the university, is a pompous fool.

Who better to be the victim of a crime that can never be unravelled?

But as Paul and his friend Gary stage a break-in into Claptrap's mansion, they don't realise that his dead body is already waiting for them.

Detective Inspector Percy Peach takes the lead on the investigation but with an endless list of suspects, can he find the murderer amongst them?

There’s Carter’s soon to be ex-wife, his envious colleague and gorgeous mistress in contention, as well as the ringleaders of the campus drug scene…

With suspects holding on to secrets and alibis falling through, Peach needs to dig through the lies and suspicions to find the real culprit.

'A Little Learning' is an expertly plotted crime thriller from a master story-teller.

Praise for J. M. Gregson:

“Peach is as distinctive as Inspector Morse” Booklist.

“A clever mystery” Kirkus.

“Compelling characters” Booklist.

“Stylishly written and suspenseful” Booklist.

James Michael Gregson taught for twenty-seven years in schools, colleges and universities before concentrating on full-time writing. He has written books on subjects as diverse as golf and Shakespeare. His other crime novels include ‘Making a Killing’, ‘Stranglehold’ and ‘Body Politic’.

Dead on Course is the third in the Superintendent John Lambert/Detective Sergeant Bert Hook series by JM Gregson. It's on countdown for about 2 more days.
link: http://www.amazon.com/Dead-Course-La...dp/B00LGLTH2Y/
Spoiler:
Quote:
Amid the luxurious surroundings of the Wye Castle Hotel and Country Club, a man is found dead on the golf course.

Superintendent Lambert and Sergeant Hook establish fairly quickly how he died.

But discovering who killed him proves a far more difficult challenge.

The golf course and hotel are set in spectacular scenery beside one of England's most beautiful rivers, with Hereford's ancient Cathedral visible in the distance.

In May this incomparable valley is at its best, yet it is a bizarre setting for the investigation of a brutal murder.

Gradually, over the days of their stay, Lambert unearths the secrets of the group who surrounded the dead man.

The investigation becomes ever more urgent, for even as the suspects play golf and enjoy good food and wine, there is more violence threatened within the ivy-clad walls of the old hotel…

Dead on Course’ is a chilling, expertly-plotted mystery story. It is perfect for fans of Ian Rankin and Peter Robinson.

Praise for J M Gregson:

‘Begins with quiet observation before pouncing to murderous effect’ - Sunday Express

‘A chilling story that never flags from start to finish’ - Bolton Evening News

Shades of Death is a non-series title by Aline Templeton. It's on countdown for about six more days.
link: http://www.amazon.com/Shades-Death-A...dp/B00LR68CFQ/
Spoiler:
Quote:
Seventeen years after her death, the skeletal remains of an eleven-year-old girl are discovered buried deep in the caves of Derbyshire's Peak District.

Close to the body lies a crudely-carved clay model of a sinister jackal-headed creature.

What is the connection?

As DS Tom Ward takes charge of the police investigation, the secrets surrounding a group of now grown-up children and their sinister 'Egyptian game' are gradually revealed.

Secrets which have lain buried for almost twenty years.

Secrets which will now emerge with unexpected and devastating consequences.

When the body of a seemingly innocent and beautiful young widow is discovered, it seems the killer is still at large.

And the game is by no means over.

Tom Ward slowly peels away layers of deception that span two decades - but finds himself dangerously mixed up in a deadly plot.

Set in the rugged and forbidding landscape of the Peak District , ‘Shades of Death’ combines ritual murder, haunted underground caves and computer viruses to create a tense psychological thriller.

Aline Templeton’s books have been widely praised:

'Templeton's a considerable writer, both intelligent and intuitive' Literary Review

`A creepy combination of detective and Gothic' Sunday Post

On the bitterly cold morning of January 6, a frozen body is found in the Lancashire town of Brunton.

It seems 19-year-old Hannah Woodgate is the latest victim of the serial killer the media have dubbed “the Lancashire Leopard”.

Detective Inspector Percy Peach is determined to find the Leopard before he kills again.

But with no motive, no fingerprints and no clues, that is proving to be a very hard task indeed.

How does the Leopard choose his victims?

And, with a 60-strong task-force going through a painstaking process of eliminating suspects trying to track him down, how is he keeping one step ahead of the police at every turn?

When the next woman’s body is found, the police are as baffled as ever.

Whom should they suspect?

Handsome loner Clyde Northcott, who was found with drugs after a bust-up at a party?

Neo-Nazi thug Paul Dutton, who has shown he can certainly be violent?

What about Terry Plant, recently released from prison, and on the hunt for his ex-wife?

Or Michael Devaney, who certainly has reason to hold a grudge against women?

With no shortage of suspects, or victims, DI Peach faces fatal pressure to find the ‘Lancashire Leopard’ before he makes his next kill.

Agatha is beginning to gain some notoriety for her crime writing and she is busy working on her latest novel.

But then her neighbour tells her there has been a real ‘murder at the vicarage’ - a young man, Cecil Coates, has been poisoned, and due to Christie’s expertise in the crime genre, the neighbourhood wants her to investigate.

At first Agatha is reluctant to get involved. After all, she is a writer, not a detective.

But then Robert Sayer, godson of her neighbour, and one of the main suspects in the case, appeals to her directly for help, and she finds herself being drawn in…
