It was purposeful. Less so with Ondaatje who was more a victim of just too many titles. I easily could have had thirty titles without even blinking.

So I will try and keep up with what is happening with this book club even though I am now traveling from place to place across the Southern United states in a motorhome. The worst of North Wisconsin winter left behind.

All these selections sound interesting to me. I would be happy to read any of them, except perhaps Alice Munro as I have already read a couple of books by her.

I am very very slowly catching up (I hope to finish Fugitive pieces tonight, and then on to The Master) - house renovations plus a lot happening at work have floored me for the past three months or so. It is still not entirely over, but I feel incredibly guitly, plus I am missing you guys really very badly! So, I am not volunteering just yet

, but if there are no other takers, take me as default!

Hope the reno's going well, paola! So it sounds like you're volunteering if no one else does? Just a heads up for you then (though you may already realise this), I think there's still some other people out there who might volunteer but so many of us are ineligible for now from already having a go that there's a good chance the month may be yours. Whenever your month is, I'll be looking forward to it.

so here I go, taking you for a little trip to Italy!

In my selection I looked for books that were available in electronic format, that were hopefully a little less known, and (unashamedly selfishly) that I haven't read or that I read so long ago that reading with you it would still feel fresh. I also wanted to limit myself to ten titles, to make sure that the final selection gets a good run of votes. So here you have it:

The contemporaries (in alphabetical order):
- Silk (Seta), Alessandro Baricco
- Three Horses (Tre cavalli), Erri De Luca
- My Brilliant Friend (L'amica geniale), Elena Ferrante
- Pereira Mantains (Sostiene Pereira), Antonio Tabucchi

And the modern classics (in chronological order based on the author's birthdate):
- Zeno’s conscience (La coscienza di Zeno), Italo Svevo
- Reeds in the wind (Canne al vento), Grazia Deledda
- The tartar steppe (Il deserto dei tartari), Dino Buzzati
- The Conformist (Il Confromista), Alberto Moravia
- Family Chronicle (Cronaca familiare), Vasco Pratolini
- The day of the Owl (Il giorno della Civetta), Leonardo Sciascia

I must confess that I didn't know most of these authors at all, though I have heard of Alberto Moravia and Elena Ferrante.

I have checked out my library, which sadly only has a couple of these books, so I shall have to look further afield.

Interesting list Paola, and I am pleased that it will introduce me to many authors that were unknown to me. In fact the only name that I recognized was Deledda. I did read La madre as part of my Nobel Prize for Literature project that is still in progress. So Canne al vento will be new to me as well.
