I think I will re-read his books. He is my favorite author. I hate there will be no more Discworld books to enjoy. That makes me sad. S |

Very sad news indeed. I must admit that I stopped with Discworld around the 14th book. I did enjoy his other work as well, his youth and SF novels. They get largely overshadowed by the Discworld books, but deserve attention as well... Oh well, lets play the Discworld adventure again on my pc. Also a truly classic adventure. |

I've printed this list of "How to Read (ie what order) Terry Pratchett's Discworld Books" although I reversed the sections. I put the "publication order" section at the end, and prefer to read them by the second ordering. http://www.poslarchive.com/math/misc/discworld.html I've tried to read them in publication order, and I always get hung up on the early ones, which I can no longer make it through (too trite). So I was for years stuck on book 3 or so, and never made it into the really good books of the Watch series. Big Mistake!!! Now that I've started in more or less the 2nd order .... I am proselytizing Terry Pratchett books to anyone who will listen to me! |

Just found out. Very sad. I still have about fifteen books left to finish Discworld. |

He was a talented and popular author. I can see that even if I'm not an ardent fan. I imagine he was the type of person to picture mortality in general and maybe his own death when writing about people who died in his books. RIP.

Very sad to hear, but OTOH, he had a good life in which he made a lot of positive contributions to the world, and it ended while he was still in command of his mental faculties before they deteriorated too much (which was something he feared and thus campaigned for euthanasia rights), and he otherwise seemed to be in decent health. So while it would have been nice if he'd lived long enough to see more effective treatments for Alzheimer's in his lifetime, this seems like it was a reasonably good way for him to go, all things considered. Wish I'd gone and bought a few more of his newer books (or just added more aggressively to my slow acquisition of the Discworld in French translation, which are done excellently, BTW) while he was still alive to enjoy the infinitesimal royalties, but I do have a substantial stash of nearly-complete series purchases made over the past decade-and-a-half which I'll be dipping into for nostalgia re-reads. One of my very favourite authors. He will be much missed. :*( "Don't think of it as dying," Death said. "Just think of it as leaving early to avoid the rush." May he rest in peace. |

My advice to most of my friends is to start with Equal Rites which might be my favourite Discworld title. I love the witches. Otherwise Mort is a nice start. I'm not as big a fan of The Watch books which are hit or miss for me. Death and The Witches always hit me in the right spot. | |
