Now Apple will claim they invented the smart watch and try and sue everyone.

So far I've seen nothing of interest from any of the smartwatches to be released from any of the major players. They have all tied their limited function smartwatches to their own smartphone lineup. Unless a smartwatch can do it all without a smartphone, and do it well, then it is just the stupid little brother of the smartphone and tagging along for the ride. Boring and senseless in most cases. But I wasn't wowed by the first smartphones either as they had so few apps and not much functionality. It took a few years before they got my attention. So maybe smartwatches will evolve into a truly useful device in a few years, but I doubt it.

I just don't understand this overhype about $400 watches. Who needs a watch when we all have smart phones.

I would be a bit surprised if the starting steel edition really is twice the price of the sports edition, unless there is some difference other than simply the exterior. | |

In theory, that's what the event will explain. I will say that since I tend to stick my iPhone in a pocket rather than carry it in my hand, begin able to look down at my watch, and see who is calling before I answer is appealing. I wear a watch anyway, so it's not a stretch for me. For someone who doesn't wear a watch anymore, I would imagine that Apple will need to make a compelling case of why you would want to buy one.

As far as "SmartPhones" go, this is as far as I might go: http://www.gearbest.com/sports-led-w.../pp_58112.html And even that is a stretch. Though the battery life looks good. |

Well, if that's all you got out of it, then you were not paying attention. The Sports watch starts at $350 The Steel model starts at $550 (yea, Gruber was somewhat off on this one) and goes up depending on the band you buy. Basically, they are pitching the Apple Watch as a way to access various features on your iPhone without having to pull it out of your pocket. It also comes with the necessary sensors to monitor various physical activities (exercise etc...), use Apple pay with the appropriate sales device, answer the phone, connect to wifi, respond to text messages, get notifications. It can also act as your boarding pass and hotel key with the appropriate airline and hotels. All in all, interesting. I tend to prefer not carrying my phone around with me when I'm at home, so being able to answer the phone via my watch is pretty nice. I've already answered my phone via my iPad and it's quite handy. If the battery really does last 18 hours, then that would work for me. Just charge it on my night stand when I go to bed. |
