Tarnished Brass: The Kansas Fifteenth Volunteer Cavalry in Price's Raid by Bill Hoyt
The Kansas Fifteenth Volunteer Cavalry played an integral part in routing Sterling Price's Confederate army at Westport. Yet within months, its officers were in jail, under sentence of death, or rousted out of the Army. Tarnished Brass shows how the circumstances of the Fifteenth's founding led inexorably to its demise. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00UBDSC60/ http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00UBDSC60/ http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00UBDSC60/ |

Big, Big Markdown on a 5-Star-Rated Daniel Rushkoff Business Title.
The markdown is 90% of regular digital (not print list) price.
Get Back in the Box. By Douglas Rushkoff. Rated 5 stars, from 15 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $14.99; regular digital price $9.78; Kindle price now $0.99. HarperCollins e-books. 336 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Get-Back-Box-D...ack+in+the+Box. Book Description Douglas Rushkoff was one of the first social commentators to identify the new culture around the internet. He has spent nearly a decade advising companies on the ways they can re-orient their businesses to the transformations the internet has caused. Through his speaking and consulting, Rushkoff has discovered an important and unrecognized shift in American business. Too many companies are panicked and operating in survival mode when the worst of the crisis has already passed. Likening the internet transformation to the intellectual and technological ferment of the Enlightment, Rushkoff suggests we have a remarkable opportunity to re-integrate our new perspective with the work we actually do. Instead of running around trying to "think out of the box," Rushkoff demonstrates, now is the time to "get back in the box" and improve the way we do our jobs, run our operations and drive innovation from the ground up. Combining stories gleaned from his consulting with a thrilling tour of history's dramatic moments and clever readings of cultural shift we've just experienced, Rushkoff offers a compelling vision of the simple and effective ways businesses can re-invigorate themselves. The Zen Experience by Thomas Hoover
(Originally New American Library/Penguin 1980, now reprinted by the author) "The best history of Zen ever written." Library Journal Beginning with Indian Buddhism and Chinese Taoism it shows Zen as it was created by the personalities, perceptions, and actions of its masters over the centuries. Gradual and sudden enlightenment, shock enlightenment, the koan, the migration of Zen to Japan. With anecdote and memorable quotation, this long-needed work restores Zen to its living, human form. The truth of Zen has always resided in individual experience rather than in theoretical writings. To give the modern reader access to understanding of this truth, THE ZEN EXPERIENCE illumines Zen as it was created and shaped by the personalities, perceptions, and actions of its masters over the centuries. Beginning with the twin roots of Zen in Indian Buddhism and Chinese Taoism, we follow it through its initial flowering in China under the First Patriarch Bodhidharma; its division into schools of "gradual" and "sudden" enlightenment under Shen-hsui and Shen-hui; the ushering in of its golden age by Hui-neng; the development of "shock" enlightenment by Ma-tsu; its poetic greatness in the person of Han-shan; the perfection of the use of the koan by Ta-hui; the migration of Zen to Japan and its extraordinary growth there under a succession of towering Japanese spiritual leaders. Rich in historical background, vivid in revealing anecdote and memorable quotation, this long-needed work succeeds admirably in taking Zen from the library shelves and restoring its living, human form. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0042X99TY/ http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0042X99TY/ http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0042X99TY/ |

I have noticed since New Year's quite a number of books on de-cluttering. Apparently it's the fad of 2015.

Along with decluttering ebooks, there are a lot of how-to-organize ebooks out there, too. I guess the ideas go hand-in-hand. Interestingly, by far the majority of the decluttering and organizing ebooks seem to be self-published/Amazon Direct. You spoke of a trend that you've seen. I've noticed another trend, a small one at the present time at least. Instead of decluttering and organizing their stuff, some people just get rid of almost all of it and move into "tiny houses" that they have built. Some of these houses are so small that the whole house can fit on a utility or single car trailer (trailers usually pulled behind automobiles)! Consequently, there are more and more books that I've seen on that subject, some with detailed plans of different tiny houses. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 03-08-2015 at 06:12 PM. |

Life in the English Country Cottage by Adrian Tinniswood Whether a harmonious blend of timber frame and thatch or golden Cotswold stone, the English Cottage symbolises country life at its most seductive and offers a chance to return to a rural Eden that was lost at the dawn of the Industrial Revolution. The picture of cottage life is an attractive and enduring one, fascinating writers and artists for the last two hundred years. But the reality of life in an English country cottage was far from idyllic for the medieval farmer. From the home of the feudal farmer to the holiday retreat of the bourgeois in the twentieth century, the author traces the history of the cottage, exploring how them came to be built, the materials used to build them, and how their appearance was affected by social forces and changing trends. The author concentrates of the inhabitants of the cottage, how they spent their time, how they were treated, what they ate and where they slept, and how they decorated and furnished their homes. Adrian Tinniswood is an architectural historian, teacher and writer, as well as a consultant to the National Trust. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TIHY354/ http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00TIHY354/ http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00TIHY354/ |

Huge Markdown on this Book for Men and Women about Midlife.
With this book being published by Zondervan, a "Christian" publisher, there will probably be at least a few references, etc. to Christianity. After reading the book description and skimming over the table of contents, I felt that the references, etc. were probably few enough that the book would have broad-based appeal and that it could be posted on the "Non-Fiction" thread.
Stuck in Halftime: Reinvesting Your One and Only Life. By Bob P. Buford. Rated 5 stars, but from only 5 reviews at the present time. Print list price $17.99; Regular(?) digital price $5.98. Kindle price now $0.99. Zondervan, publisher. 176 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Stuck-Halftime...+and+Only+Life. Book Description Since the release of Halftime in 1994, more than 150,000 people have purchased that book and begun a journey from success to significance. In a way that no one could have predicted, Halftime started a widespread movement viewing midlife as an opportunity rather than a crisis. It helped men and women between the ages of 35 and 50 realize they may have another thirty years of active, vibrant living ahead of them. And, according to author Buford, retirement is not the optimal option. But now, many of the people who began the journey from success to significance have found themselves sidetracked, stuck in the middle of their transition. Stuck in Halftime coaches readers how to get past the barriers that stand in their way to maturity and fulfillment. It outlines eight "myths of halftime" and explains the new set of rules for this second half of life’s journey. Combining practical guidance with personal stories of people who have become "unstuck," Stuck in Halftime renews the vision and determination of those who heard the "still, small voice of God" calling them to a life of significance. |

Volume 2 of The Collected Letters of C. S. Lewis is $1.99 at multiple retailers, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Kobo. Volumes 1 and 3 have been discounted in the past (and volume 1 is only $3.99 at Kobo right now), but this is the first time I know of that Volume 2 has dipped below $10.
