Smashwords: Read an ebook week - Deals for March 1- 7

Smashwords is having a 'Read an ebook Week', going from March 1-7.

Go to the homepage, located here:

http://www.smashwords.com/

and then go to the left side of the page.

Authors can apparently add their books to the promotion, so you may wish to check back with them on a daily basis. You can also perform a search for your favorite author(s) to see if any of their books are offered at a special price or for free.

I would like to thank BearMountainBooks for advising me of this week-long sale.

Canadian backlist re-publisher Bev Editions are having their usual RAEBW sale/freebies, good through today.

I'm not up to doing full descriptive linkage, but these are all well-established Canadian authors, several award-winners and some with their own Wikipedia entries, and high-quality mostly-previously-published fiction, at up to 75% off (with a few free).

This is their regular publisher page with bio-blurbs of their authors, and their Smashwords catalogue page.

Included are mystery authors Don Gutteridge (historical mysteries set in 1830s Toronto which I will be buying shortly and literary fiction), Lyn Hamilton (archaeological mysteries, an Arthur Ellis Award winner), Howard Engel (an Order of Canada recipient, his book is a freebie), and many more. There's also quality literary fiction by Morley Torgov (a Stephen Leacock Humour Award winner), and several others.

Much of their non-fiction is high quality as well, by established Canadian historians, often on subjects of particular Canadian interest (but also extending worldwide), and I especially recommend the Set What Price You Want of historian Marian Fowler's Beneath the Peacock Fan: First Ladies of the Raj, a set of mini-biographies of prominent aristocratic British-Indian women trying to cope with the difficulties of adapting to colonial life in the then-British empire over the centuries. I have this in hardcover somewhere, and snapped it up when it went on sale during a previous RAEBW sale.

It's a bit of a "lite" pop-academic overview of the subjects, but contains enough detail and references to whet your appetite for more, and you certainly can't beat the price.

Many of Bev Editions' titles are priced at $4.99 or less before the general 75% discount, and here are their freebie offerings that I spotted for you to try (Smashwords could really improve their sales by listing in the search/catalogue results what discounts apply to which like they do in the filtered dedicated sale pages, sigh).

I can speak to the Lyn Hamilton mysteries--cozy/adventure and fun from what I remember (it's been a long time!) I really enjoyed the first one a lot and have vague memories of book 2. It was back in the day when finding out about new books in a series was much harder so I don't think I read beyond that. I had no idea she was on smash. I know she had to quit writing a while back because I remember coming across the blog entry.

I've read most (or maybe even all) of the series and enjoyed them all. I do like archaeological mysteries, so was predisposed to like them, so YMMV...

She has since passed away (2009) so there won't be any more in the series...

The coupons were under each book that WAS on sale. You can to click the book to see if the book was 100 percent, 75 percent, etc off (hey, it wasn't my idea to do it that way). Then under each book there was the right coupon for that sale price.

Some authors were matching the deals on their blogs or Kobo and the like so you might double-check to see if they are still on sale at those locations for the books you are interested in.

Re: Lyn Hamilton -- I was pretty sure the blog post I read when she broke off with her publishing company mentioned an illness, but I had not heard she passed away. Very sad. Yes, I *DO* love an archeological mystery--Elizabeth Peters set the bar very high for that sub-genre!!! I have added more of Lyn's books to my TBR.

Really? I thought these were once a year. I'll watch for it and post if I see another one. I follow the blog and newsletter thingie, but I am not religious about it. Smash has been picking up more and more backlist authors in the last couple of years. I am pretty sure Gemma Halliday's imprint uses them (not the author necessarily but her publishing imprint.)

There's no guaranty, but they have in the past. In fact, just before the sale started the announcement on their page called it the "Winter in July sale" so it may be a good bet. (I alerted them to the error on their Facebook page.)

I picked up some Lyn Hamilton books that I didn't already have, and I have seen Gemma Halliday over there as both an author and publisher.

I know they said in the one newsletter/blog thingie they knew the front page was wrong, but I never saw it wrong. By the time I clicked it, it was correct. Good to know. Thanks for telling me. I wouldn't know to watch for it otherwise.

For the next one, Gemma Halliday published a book called Tell Tale Con by Aimee Gilchrist (I think that is the author's name--not positive because she writes under more than one name and sometimes I combine the two). Great cozy YA mystery without the usual YA angst. It was a fun book if you like cozy mysteries!
