Maybe the second book in Brandon Sanderson's Reckoners series, Firefight? It takes place shortly after the events in Steelheart.

And although it isn't necessary to read since enough of the background is given in Firefight, there is also the short story Mitosis in between them.

I started "Mira Grant"/Seanan McGuire's Symbiont today, not long before day-tripping to a convention to see her in person. Her fourth InCryptid book comes out Tuesday, and the first chapter was fun. Screaming migratory yams!

I almost never read two books from the same series back-to-back. Not unless there's a really mean cliffhanger. In fact I like to read something from a wholly different genre and style, if possible.

Also, maybe more importantly, I don't yet own Firefight, and I do own hundreds of other things I ought to be able to read from.

Anyway, I eventually decided to go with Yendi by Steven Brust, the second Vlad Taltos book. (Maybe not a wholly different genre, given that they both identify as fantasy, but different enough for me.)

Wow, that's very different from my practices. I tend to binge-read whatever I have of a series in one run, which often leads me to buy and read the first book, then get the rest of the set for a mass read later. In fact, that's one of the things I love about ebooks: that I can load up a whole series on my reader and just blaze through it.

I'll frequently switch genres after such a marathon, though. For instance, I've just finished three shorts by one author and have started a novel by her pseudonym, which should easily carry me until Tuesday - when her next book in that first series comes out and I can grab it. After that, I'll probably switch from those genres (UF and biotech) to space-based SF. I've got a few Expanse stories piled up...

When I'm reading a series I generally do so by reading one or two other books in between each book of the series. That's why, for example, it took me about two years to get through the 85 or so books that Agatha Christie wrote. Reading 85 Agatha Christie's back to back is not something I could face .

Spartacus by Howard Fast. A remarkable book. Fast wrote it after being imprisoned during the Mccarthy Witchunts. He refused to reveal the names of people who had helped raise funds to feed refugees from the Franco dictatorship who were stuck in the mountains while fleeing to France.

The book has little resemblance to the film. It takes place after Spartacus and his army are defeated. A truly remarkable tale of oppression and the human spirit. Some of the finest prose I've read. It's an unsung American classic.

Agatha Raisin and the Murderous Marriage (Agatha Raisin #5)
by M.C. Beaton - 1/5

There are three reasons why I think this book does not merit one star. The beginning, the shortness of the book, and the lateness of the divulging of the culprit. However there are a couple of reasons why I am giving it the lowest score...Goodwill from other books in the series wasted, waste of opportunity for not taking advantage of the superb opening few paragraphs, bringing James and Agatha back to square one as if nothing has happened. I also think that the dreary, boring investigation of the book, which already feels like a tired 20th entry in the series, plus the lack of brains throughout damned the book as a failure. My patience is wearing thin with the series and if the next 3 books don't deliver I'm through with it.

Well, yes. A double-digit streak like that would be a bit daunting. I'm usually looking at half a dozen books at most in a binge.

Well I finished the first in the series, Death of a Gossip, and gave it 3 stars. I really enjoyed the setting and the comfortably familiar plot devices, but was disappointed by the over hasty and rather risible denouement, which really let it down.

That said, the strength of the book is in it's characterisations, and the slowly emerging character of Hamish himself, and because of these reasons I have moved straight on to the second book, Death of a Cad .

Another point to consider: the third book in the series, Calamity, is scheduled to be published in spring 2016, so you have lots of time to get back to Firefight.

Still reading West with the Night on my Kindle, but meanwhile finished the latest Mary Russell/Sherlock Holmes book by Laurie King: Dreaming Spies. I really like this series, though there were a couple of duds in the middle, but this was definitely NOT a dud. Excellent.

The action takes place on a cruise from Mumbai to Japan, then in Japan, and finally in Oxford. This is Russell and Holmes at their best, IMO, and only one place where I thought the author had them miss a clue that they should have clearly gotten. All in all an excellent read (and listen, since about 2/3rds of it was as an Audible book.)

Finished with the Tolkien bio... makes me want to read his books again.

ReadPersopolis, a graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi, for school.

Working on The Memoirs of Detective Vidocq which is kind of a difficult slog.

Death of a Hussy (Hamish Macbeth #5)
by M.C. Beaton - 3/5

My love affair with M.C. Beaton - only figuratively speaking, that goes without saying - is most likely over. I've been reading her two big series side by side. Well, now I've decided to ditch the Agatha Raisin series. I've been as prompt in the past. I've almost always abandoned a well liked series due to a one star rating. It was the case with the Inspector Rebus series and also that of Inspector Rutledge series, and the Gabriel Allon one. I think I persevered only with Joanne Fluke's Hannah Swensen series where I've rated 7 of her books one star.

Despite the 3 star rating for Death of A Hussy, I have contained in my mind, only the negatives from the book which weighed on me. Stuff that faded as the story progressed. I'll enumerate them. Firstly, Hamish Macbeth's searing - or is that 'seering'? - ability to guess when he's being lied to. How easy would it to solve any case with such a knack. The book does well to gloss over the times Hamish is being lied to by the murderer. So this ability comes and goes, unless one dredges up arguments that do and can sound plausible. This is where I differ from any possible fans of the books. I judge the books on their effect on my brain and the level of hedonistic impact on me as a reader.

I must also say that Hamish's hateful relationship with Blair now has a touch of the farcical in it. It's an abusive relationship, of the likes people like Hamish would recognize and clear off it soon. But I was irked by the revisionism and the fact that Hamish pined for Blair's return. That was totally uncalled for.

Spoiler:
Then there's the most important character of the book to talk about...Alison Kerr. She's the one I wanted murdered, yet when push came to shove, I wanted her to escape death. This is what I'd call a well written character. It would have blown my mind if she'd died.
Hamish finds it loathsome to be the object of Alison's lust (and also escapes the brief advances of that lady cop, Mary Graham). I have a minor gripe with Hamish's orientation in his love life. His ghostly romance with Priscilla should lead to nowhere. Since that possibility imploded, Hamish has met one or two suitors, and I hope not too many pages are dedicated to his shambolic and illogical love life. I need the author to focus on the murder investigations. Police cases, when stripped of their trappings, are simply triggers for adventure. As long as the pustular aspects of the Hamishverse are kept at bay I'm happy. Else, he goes the same way as Agatha Raisin.

Another enjoyable murder mystery.

I followed that with The Phaeton Condition by Douglas R. Mason. A environmental apocalypse novel from the early 1970s. I should have abondoned it when he got someone's weight off by a factor of ten through using unfamiliar kilograms. (A young woman does NOT weigh 5.5kg! 55kg, yes!)

But I persisted. It wasn't worth it.

Now: Grantville Gazette #58 edited by Paula Goodlett. Enjoyable lightweight stuff.
