prices here in Germany start at 180 EUR (200 USD) but it would to be difficult to find a shop that ships to the US - and then expedited shipping by air would cost the difference. have fun |

Also just ordered mine from Latvia via eBay.
Can any current user tell me if you can successfully use the Nook and Kindle reader apps with this unit? Consensus appears to be stay with or downgrade to 4.4 depending on what your unit ships with. If all I intend to use this for is simply reading my ePub and Mobi ebooks, should I downgrade or stay with 5.4 and use "KOReader"? Thanks for any and all help/suggestions. Hoping this lets me fully retire my Kindle DX! |

I don't think that Mobi books are handled very well using the default reading apps on the PocketBook devices. If koreader handles them well, then maybe you should stick with firmware 5.4. It's no big deal switching between firmware versions, so you can just try both versions and see which is better for you.

Will give KOReader/v 5.4 a try first and then go from there.
Thanks. |

BTW...
Can the Nook and Kindle apps be downloaded/sideloaded to this unit and, if so, how well do they work? Currently toying with "AIReader" on my LG gPad 8.3. It does only ePub and Mobi (all that I am after) and, while having its quirks like all other reader apps, does pretty well with both formats. |

The PocketBook devices are not based on Android, so none of those apps will work on an Inkpad.

A couple more questions....
Just looked for the 840 at XDA-developers.com and it did not come up. Is anyone working on unlocking this unit so that it could be either dual booted to Android or totally converted to Android? I went down this road with both my original Nook Color and HD+ and totally (and quite successfully) converted both to full Android tablet status with the able assistance of the XDA crowd. Have elected to leave both my LG G3 and gPad 8.3 stock so far. I did jailbreak my Kindle DX. Would it be a possibility with the 840 if someone far more well versed in the arcane magic needed to do this got involved? Also, what are the reader app options currently available for simply using ePub and Mobi with 4.4 and 5.4. Hopefully the next firmware update may make the need for all of this moot. Thanks for the ongoing help. |

I've never heard this discussed in this English forum. There's more action in the German forum, but I don't remember seeing any discussion of installing Android onto the devices there, either. The most action is in the Russian forum at http://www.the-ebook.org/. I don't know if the topic has ever been discussed there.
Bear in mind that E-Ink readers are not general purpose tablets or smart phones. The display hardware requires special handling. You'd probably have to look at what Onyx and Sony have done to get Android running on their devices, keeping in mind that each display needs its own special drivers (i.e. don't expect to copy an Android OS from another device and have it just work). My uninformed guess is that you shouldn't expect to see Android on any existing PocketBook devices. I've heard that the upcoming large screen device will have Android, so maybe they'll produce a smaller ereader with Android after that. Who knows? Finally, no recent PocketBook devices have been rooted as far as I know. If you wanted to install a different OS on one of their devices, you'd probably have to do some hardware hacking to do it. |

Thanks for that detailed reply.
I will keep my fingers crossed for further Pocketbook firmware development to iron out what kinks may remain when it comes to simply reading ePub and Mobi with minimal fuss and bother. They have certainly hit upon the right size and attributes as I am looking forward to retiring my Kindle DX in favor of the 840. |

So how do you like it so far? I got mine yesterday and it was slow until I downgrade to 4.4. A lot better. I like it because it has a front light. I had DX and M96 and they didn't have a front light so this was big improvement. First time I bought a Pocketbook.
