Fantastic Markdown on a Highly-Rated Southern Cookbook.

For the benefit of those outside of the U.S., "the South" means the southeastern United States, ya'll.

Quick U.S. history lesson. Why is the southeastern part of the United States called "the South," and not "the Southeast"? Well, when it was given that name the settled part of the United States didn't go but maybe 1/3 across the continent (from east to west). At that time, "the South" was the south part of the United States.

There's a similar situation with "the Midwest" in the United States. The Midwest is nowhere close to being in the middle of the western United States today; it was given that name, however, when it was the middle part of what was then called "the West." Around that time any settled territory west of the Appalachian Mountains was considered "the West."

Now, here's information about the book.

At My Grandmother's Table: Heartwarming Stories and Cherished Recipes from the South. By Faye Porter. Rated 4 1/2 stars, from 27 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $24.99; regular(?) digital price $14.44; Kindle price now $0.99. HarperCollins Christian Publishing, publisher. 282 pages. http://www.amazon.com/At-Grandmother...from+the+South.

Book Description
What would you give for an afternoon in your grandmother's kitchen?

Leaning over the countertop, you watched as she added the flour―just a little at a time―to the bowl of her old, yellow Sunbeam stand mixer. To her, cooking may have been as second nature as setting the table. To you, it seemed almost like magic―the way she skillfully put things together to create the mouthwatering meals and one-of-a-kind desserts you enjoyed at her table. Likely, it's her culinary delights that have set the bar for everything you've eaten since. And let's face it, her pan fried pork chops and home-baked banana bread make anyone else's versions pale in comparison. If you find yourself wishing for just a little more time in your grandmother's kitchen―complete with her stories and the memories of the comforting favorites she lovingly made for you―you're sure to embrace this celebration of grandmother's cooking. She'd be proud!

To distinguish it from the opposing side during the War of Northern Aggression, of course....

and the Southwest, to keep you confused, is on the other side of Texas, which arbitrarily is considered South, SouthWest or neither (just Texas), depending on who is doing the classifying.

Today, The South may or may not include the mid-Atlantic states; the SouthEastern US generally cuts off at a northern latitude of KY or TN (or even only as far as the north of LA/AL/GA/SC), depending on whether you are talking geography, politics or climate zones for plants.

As for the historic "South", even there the lines are blurry. Some states were "border states" (KY, WV, even DC, MD, DE & MO), while other states considered "South" were actually split along geographic lines (TN, for example) in both their politics and traditional foods.

ETA: I looked at the cookbook. The cornbread is a northern recipe (has wheat flour) and I don't know of anyone that adds chicken broth to their turkey dressing (since there is plenty of turkey broth available when making it...). Recipes are apparently also mostly modern, using mixes and "cans of", rather than all "real ingredients". Not that modern grandmothers might not use such (then again, they might take a bucket of 'Kentucky Fried' to a re-union, as well).

Well, butter my butt and call me a biscuit! (said by Paula Deen, unknown if original with her).

I didn't investigate the cookbook enough to notice that it wasn't a bona fide Southern cookbook! My apologies! I'm glad that you pointed that out, so folks who saw my post won't make recipes from it and think that they have cooked real Southern food!

And, yep, there's lots of ambiguity and difference of opinion about what constitutes the boundaries of "the South."

Friend, Florida is as far south in the United States (or maybe it's just the contiguous United States) that you can go. If you go to Key West, at the end of the Keys, there is a marker so stating.

BTW, south Georgia is really just north Florida. ha The state of Florida really should just go ahead and annex it. ha

Markdown on Emeril Lagasse's Sizzling Skillets and Other One-Pot Wonders. BAM!

I don't remember ever posting a cookbook of Emeril Lagasse's before. I'm about to rectify that error.

The photographs, for those recipes which have them (not all do), are awesome.

Sizzling Skillets and Other One-Pot Wonders. By Emeril Lagasse. Rated 4 1/2 stars, from 51 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $25.99; regular digital price $15.29; Kindle price now $3.79. William Morrow Cookbooks, publisher. 309 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Sizzling-Skill...ne-Pot+Wonders.

Book Description
In chef Emeril Lagasse’s tribute to one-pot wonders, he shows there’s nothing more satisfying than a hearty meal prepared in your most cherished pot or pan. Whether baked in a cast-iron skillet, braised in a Dutch oven, seared in a hot wok, or simmered in a slow-cooker, Emeril’s Sizzling Skillets and Other One-Pot Wonders serves up delicious meals to fit any pan or palate.

Go beyond your typical soups, stews, and casseroles to indulge in crave-worthy main courses like “BLT” Risotto or New England-Style Fish and Shellfish Chowder, and comforting classics such as Cola-Braised Pot Roast with Vegetables and Southern-Style Chicken and Dumplings. Emeril also explores the spice trail with his bold twist on some of the world’s global traditions—Indian Karahi Chicken, Korean Kimchi and Beef Stew, and Mexican Pork and Red Chile Posole.

With more than 130 flavorful dishes and beautiful color photos throughout, Emeril’s recipes use foolproof techniques and staples from a well-stocked pantry to create filling meals that you’ll be proud to bring to the table. The perfect family dinner or star of your next potluck celebration is just one pot away!

I would allow that North Florida could be considered Southern. But, South Florida is more like Kew York and New Jersey.

Well, I am familiar with north central Florida (that excludes the Panhandle) and there are a lot of northerners and midwesterners in the urban areas there, too. Places like Orlando (central Florida), too (Mickey, of course, is from California. ha). But, yes, areas like Palm Beach in South Florida have a heavy percentage of New Yorkers and New Jerseyites (or whatever they're called). Especially in the winter, in which case those people are among those referred to as "snowbirds." ha

Now if Florida annexed a chunk of Rhode Island

There are some people in my town who would like to secede from Rhode Island to become the northernmost town of Florida. Think of the advantages! Florida has great fishing and crabs, Narragansett has, with the port of Galilee, great fishing, calamari, and lobsters! It completes the menus!

Think of the sailing regatta, all within the State! And there are already a lot of Florida plates on cars here, especially during the summer!

A perfect match.

Hmmm . . . . your member information says that you are in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, England, UK.

If you are in Rhode Island, would you please tell everyone that when they come down here (I live in Florida) to please not leave their left-hand turn signal on while driving, and to refrain from telling all of us how much better things are up north. hahahah
