I turn things off. I might just get involved in another project and not touch it for a couple of months.

No. Backing up any books. I've got them stashed on the computer and on a USB drive. I'd just shove the whole lot back on the ext. SD card. There is no database except for the books on the SD card and the one book I bought.

If you mean preferences, I have most of them turned off. I usually function with the bare minimum. I'm fighting assumption. I have no quarrel with those who want all the goodies, but the powers that be need to be aware that some of us don't want the extras.

It's the screen that's amiss. It acts like it's out of calibration. The touch isn't even all over.

I did read the intro to Calibre. Too much there if all you want it to do is convert books.

Lets try this again.

There IS a database on the device. It is used by the firmware to display details of all the books on the device. The database is built by scanning the books the first time they are seen on the device. The database is also used to store the book status and what is on the home screen. If the database gets corrupted, the device misbehaves. The behaviour you are describing for the tiles on the home screen are a symptom of this. I've described the fix for this above.

The touch behaviour is another thing. It could be related to the corrupt database. Fixing the database will eliminate that as possibility. It could also be dirt stuck under the bezel. This will block the IR beams and make the touch misbehave. Or it could be a faulty device. If the touch still misbehaves after fixing the database and cleaning under the bezel, then it is probably faulty and you should exchange it.

@davidfor: is there also a chance that with frequent on /off cycles and books on an external SD card that if the device does not recognize the SD card on power on that the database will be scrubbed and have to be repopulated when the card is recognized. (I'm not an SD card user and I forget the exact idiosyncrasies of the SD card handling)

I don't know. But, if something happened to change whatever the firmware is using to identify the card, that would cause the books on it to be reprocessed. I don't know how the card is identified, so I don't know what would need to be changed. But, I am pretty certain that this isn't the problem here.

Found one problem. The page jump was the refresh. Every 6 pages made it jump 6 pages.
I thought it was just a page refresh of the content.

The screen is gradually getting more responsive.

The page refresh setting is supposed to be just that; how often to do a full refresh of the screen. You seem to be saying that after paging six times, it jumps forward six pages. And that changing the refresh setting changes when and how far it jumps. This is not a behaviour I have seen on any Kobo device. Or have I misinterpreted what you said?

No. That's what it was doing. I changed refresh to one page and that stopped the jumping.
I don't see the blur, either.

I'd see the page dissolve/blur and then it would jump ahead 6 pages. Thought maybe I was holding too firmly on the lower right corner, but one jump happened when device was flat on floor. I was laying on the floor, reading.

OK, that's a new problem to me.

Is it jumping six pages all the time or just when it should refresh? Does it jump if you are paging backwards?

What format are the books? And what firmware version are you using?

The Glo has the newest firmware. It updated right after I got it.

There are choices in reading settings about how to use the screen. Left is back, Right is forward, settings in middle. The instructions say tap.

It is still jumping. If I try to tap backwards, it goes forwards. To go back, I have to swipe.

I bought Mars Rover Curiosity and downloaded some free Sci-Fi from Nook. All Nook's books. I'm reading a freebie from Nook called The Colonization of Mars and it's jumping.

Which doesn't tell me much. My Glo updated right after I got it to. But, that was over two years ago, so it's actually updated a few times since. And the newest firmware can be affected by where you are and where you bought the device. Japanese owners were only getting 3.1 until last week. Now the they are getting 3.13.1 and no-one else is getting that.

And what happens if you try one of the other tap-zone layouts?

All Nook books? Get an epub from somewhere else and try it. The library here at MR has plenty of free books that are in good state. And it means that if there is a problem, someone else can grab it and test with it as well.

I just got the Kobo 3 weeks ago.
Yes, I've tried the other configurations - same problem.
"Alley Oop through the Ulysses Trees". I got it from Smashwords, but I see Kobo also has it via Smashwords. All my other books are generic, from Gutenberg, Creative Commons, Smashwords, etc.

I see someone with a Kindle is having a similar problem. I didn't have a cover on the Kobo until yesterday. So in my case, it isn't a cover.

https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=256573

The only other purchase came from O'Reilly and it's a PDF.
"Illustrated Guide to Astronomical Wonders" I wanted the finderscope charts on my tablet. I did check it out on the Kobo - it loaded and could be read.

With all the issues you're having it really does raise the question of whether there isn't a hardware issue at the bottom of it. Jumping 6 pages on refresh is not an issue that's been reported before and that combined with everything else would make me think a warranty exchange would be advisable.

I'm starting to wonder.
I had a Nook Wifi, wanted to give it to kid. We could not unregister the device, no way, no how. Barnes and Noble Nook service couldn't do it, either. I wanted something newer and I preferred the TOS pf Kobo. It's a nice little reader, I like the light. It uses an ext_sd card, so all I had to do was plug card in from Nook. Found all the books and all opened.

I'm going to give it a bit more time. I've left it on sleep rather than turn off, I bought a case that will let it stand up - perfect for my use. I'll see if it stops in case I was squeezing it a bit too hard while holding it. If it still jumps, I will have to see about returning it.

I got the tablet 3 weeks ago - I ordered it from Kobo in Canada. The east has been having the horrific cold, so I was thinking that if ereader sat in colder than normal temps during shipping, it might have affected the touch screen. Some things are slowly improving with use.

I'll see if anyone answers about the Kindle with a similar problem.

Is there any particular department or do you just email customer service?
