@Tricho: maybe an audio tape would be helpful, if your hands won't let you write what you feel you need to get off your mind & heart?

She's still a complete klingon. Strider had been doing some serious monster cuddling while she was missing. He is still completely pissed at her and has been circling in about a 2 foot radius hissing and howling. I'm not sure if he's just yelling at her for her walk about or is trying to scare her off so he can get a cuddle.

Dang! I'd never really noticed how tooth some these guys are. I think Strider's canines are close to an inch.

Other than a lot of verbal stuff nothing has happened. The few times it sounded like it was escalating Aragorn actually got involved with a few basso profundo WHUFFS! And I'm pretty sure I saw a great big black furry paw holding down a cat tail.

I wonder if I should separate them when I go out?

Better to let them sort it. They will, and should settle back down to their new order of life. I'm willing to bet that at least part of it is that Arwen has come back smelling different. That should settle as well.

Years ago, I shared an apartment with two friends and three cats. Of the cats, Toshiro was large neutered male, amiable, and profoundly stupid. Bewilderbeast was dainty and amiable neutered female. Sponge Cat was a paranoid neutered feral rescue. You saw her at dinner. Maybe.

One Saturday night, the humans all trooped into Manhattan to see our favorite band play at a club, and got back in the wee hours of Sunday morning. As we walked in the gate to the yard, we heard a pitiful meow from under a bush. It was Sponge Cat.

The apartment was on the second floor of a converted mansion. The bathroom window was over the dormer roof over the front door. The window had been left somewhat open. Sponge Cat apparently crawled out, slipped and fell down the side of the roof, and found herself in the yard, where she hid and cowered under a bush. We collected he, brought her in, and fed and watered her.

The experience caused a dramatic change in her personality. She apparently decided that health and safety consisted being as close as possible to humans at all times. Sit in a chair, and you had a lap full of purring Sponge Cat, radiating "You're a human! You'll care for me and prevent me from winding up outside, right?" Go to bed and you had a purring throw pillow.

In Sponge Cat's case, the lesson stuck. We'll see whether Arwen gets adventurous again. But meanwhile, we're glad she's back.

Well, she may smell funny to him. I would separate them until you get back. Once the hissing, etc. has died down and he seems to know her again, you're likely safe, but with my two, even a short vet trip (an overnighter, I mean) can cause strife. Once she "smells recognizable" to him, things ought to settle down.

That's my $.02, FWIW.

So one time when Arwen was somewhere between 2 and 3, Strider woke up one morning and decided she was an alien. Nothing unusual had happened. Arwen hadn't gone into or out of heat recently, been anywhere, eaten anything unusual that I knew of. He just flipped on her. Actually almost more negative behavior than I'm getting with this incident. Not sure I ever saw the full extent of his canines back then though.

Ditto here .... Stella freaks out when Sammie or Goldie come back from a vet visit - follows them sniffing & yowling low in her throat .... I usually wipe both down with baby wipes so they both smell the same -- powdery spring fresh, or whatever scent is on the wipes ... it removes the trigger for aggressive behavior
