It's worth a try if you enjoyed The Girl on the Train. The twist and ending will not be to everyone's taste, but I did find it a compelling story, well narrated. I have no interest in seeing the movie, however. Not sure why.

I do plan to listen to Gone Girl at some point, but it seems like there's always something newer that catches my attention and I get diverted! I also have zero interest in the movie--I love to watch old movies, but rarely bother with newer ones.

Finished reading Foxglove Summer, by Ben Aaronovich, narrated by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith. This is #5 in the Peter Grant/Rivers of London series, and is another absolute winner. I deliberately held this book out and only allowed myself to read it while I was swimming, to provide a bit of incentive to get in the pool! It worked, and I'm now swimming regularly, AND I enjoyed a great book.

If you haven't had a chance to try this series, by all means grab the first, Midnight Riot, originally published in the UK as Rivers of London.

Also finished up a couple of Mercedes Lackey Valdemar books. No better than so-so, but still enjoyable, and well read by Nick Podehl. Now reading the first of a new Valdemar story arc around Mags Closer to Home. It's going well, and is a bit better than the last couple of Mags books.

Not sure what my "swimming only" book will be. Possible the next Alexander Kent Bolitho book.

I succumbed and bought A Second Chance, #3 in the Chronicles of St. Mary's series from Jodi Taylor, and read by Zara Ramm. This is an absolutely ridiculous series of books detailing the adventures of time travelling historians. But much fun.

I absolutely agree! I'm having so much fun with this series and can't wait for number 5 to be released in the next few days. I started the series based on your recommendation several posts back (Thanks for that!) but after some of the responses about violence, I hesitated. I'm so glad I went ahead and started the first book. There is violence but there are also many giggles - for me anyway. And, I don't think there could be a better reader than Ramm.

So glad it's working for you. I admit to a good deal of guilty pleasure with this series. I've actually got #4 already, but was holding off on buying #3 because I was going to have to actually pay $$ for it. I admit, not all that much, but I was being "frugal". Anyway, I went ahead and bought the eBook, and used the WhisperSync for Voice to buy the audio book. The combined price was still cheaper than the value of 1 credit.

Finished reading and listening to Dreaming Spies, the latest in the Mary Russell/Sherlock Holmes series from Laurie R. King, read by Jenny Sterlin. Wonderful. There have been a coupld of duds in this series, but this is definitely NOT a dud. The reading by Ms. Sterlin is well done, and the story was captivating from start to finish. The action starts on a cruise that Russell and Holmes are taking from Mumbai to Japan, and continues to Japan and then finally home to Russell's house in Oxford. I was frequently surprised, but never felt cheated, and only once did I think the author took a bit of a liberty with having these super detectives miss a clue that they should not have. All in all an excellent read/listen, and highly recommended.

Next up, Crown of Renewal, #5 in the Paladin's Legacy series from Elizabeth Moon. The reader is Susan Erickson for this one, and she's not my favourite, but I'll survive.

I'm about a quarter of the way through Descent, by Tim Johnston. It has overwhelmingly positive reviews, but, so far, I'm finding it slow-moving and rather tedious. POV and timeline shifts make the book extremely choppy and hard to follow.

It's about a teenage girl's disappearance while she's on a family vacation. I'm not finding any of the characters likable or relatable, nor do I care for the setting. I do like the author's way with words, however, and I'm still holding out hope for the plot.

I'm listening to Morgue Drawer Four by Jutta Profijt, Erik J. Macki (translator)...I tried starting it in eBook but it was slow going. I am finding that the Narrater MacLeod Andrews, adds a little bit of a comedic voice to the story and I'm more than halfway through with only three mini-sessions of listening so far. Looks like I might actually enjoy this series. I think the 'slow start' may have been my mood, or one of the those lost in translation moments.

Finished Tim Johnston's Descent, and though it did get more interesting, I'm amazed that so many readers and reviewers consider it a wow. It barely fits into the thriller category--the situation (girl disappears) is thriller-ish, and some surprising events occur, but the story is all fairly straightforward. I like my thrillers to have layers of secrets and hidden motivations and twists and startling revelations, all of which were lacking here.

While it wasn't a stupid waste of time like One Step Too Far, it wasn't anything special--definitely more family drama than thriller or suspense. The writing style itself, which I liked initially, eventually became too much--like the author was more concerned with showing off his lovely polished sentences than with telling the darn story. I doubt I would read another book by Tim Johnston.

Next up: A Commonplace Killing, by Sian Busby.

Listening to Lonesome Dove. This will definitely be the LAST 40-hour audio book on my list. I get bored after 20 hours.

This was read by Bernadette Dunne, who does a good job with breathless apprehension; I also listened to her read The Haunting of Hill House. Castle is wonderfully menacing with its indictment of crowd mentality, but I don't think this is as polished a work as Hill House. A very good listen.

I'm listening to Bernadette Dunne right now, reading Elizabeth Adler's Please Don't Tell. Love the narration, book itself is just OK so far.

Shirley Jackson's Lottery and Other Stories recently became available as an audiobook, as has The Witchcraft of Salem Village. I'm hoping more of her works will follow.

Yes, I very much enjoy listening to Bernadette Dunne. She did several of the Liaden Universe novels, and also did the Sharing Knife series from Lois McMaster Bujold. Along with lots of other stuff, obviously, but these were ones from favourite authors.

The trick is to not listen to the entire book in one sitting.
