Best firmware now?

Been quite some time since I checked in, and it's hard to find a particular answer; what's the best available firmware for the Touch now? I'm still pretty happy on 2.4.0, but my wife is getting really shirty with her 2.6.1, which was an accidental install; it keeps freezing and becoming completely unresposive, including physical buttons, meaning a pinhole reset Somehow she's still managed to read nearly 150 books on it...

So which one should I grab for her, and should I bother upgrading mine? Will all the reading life etc remain?

Sorry if I missed a sticky somewhere, if I didn't, I think it would be a good idea to have one with an updated first post with the "greatest hits". I know when I used to hang around here it was very hard to figure out which was the best firmware at the time.

To be honest, I'm completely happy with 3.12.1... For me there are no glaring bugs.

Seconded - although the charging, charged, and processing screens are messed up on a Touch there are no other glaring problems.

3.13.1 is the best firmware so far. If fixes one noticeable issue with 3.12.0 which is the lighter text on wake from sleep (using a sleep cover). This is no longer a problem. This is a good reason to update if possible.

Am I correct in reading that only 3.11 is available for the Touch?

If it's the latest official release, should we just update the Kobo desktop program and let it do the update? Won't lose anything?
Are the updates worth me changing from 2.4.0?

Yes.

If you want the update, that will do it and you shouldn't lose anything.

That depends. It's a while since I looked at 2.4.0, but the differences I can think of are:
  • New tiled home screen. This is the same as on the newer devices. But, the rest of the UI hasn't changed (yet).
  • Update to newer version of the RMSDK. This is the basis for the epub reader and fixed a lot of bugs. A couple were added, but I think the good outweighed the bad. One of the fixes was for long paragraph handling.
  • The annotations list got second view and sorting. Plus there were lots of bug fixes. There is still one big bug outstanding, but the overall situation is better.
  • A change to were cover images were stored. This fixed a problem with path length and covers missing if you had more than about 2500 books on the device.

Overall, I think 3.11.1 is better than 2.4.0, but I don't use my Touch much. When I do, I tend to miss the new UI in the places the Touch doesn't have it yet.

Sounds good, as 100% of my books are side-loaded epubs

I'll just have to make sure I get your Calibre plugin and backup reading stats (does it include hours etc?), otherwise worst case I can just manually mark as read anything that JD Robb / Nora Roberts has ever written and that should cover it
I probably do actually have the utility, just need to update it; been quite some time since I seriously messed with this stuff.

Unfortunately not. I haven't been able to decode the way the hours are stored.

Nice and predictable. For my wife, it would be closer to "mark the last ten pages as being read".

You will want to update the utilities plugin especially if you are sharing a library. The last big update was to handle multiple devices much better. This includes storing the reading status for different devices in different columns.

3.11

I've had no problems with 3.11 on my touch - that is the last firmware upgrade for the touch under normal upgrading procedures.

I did read somewhere that 2.8 was the last version for stats on chapter time to finish for sideloaded epubs. Since your's are all sideloaded you might miss that feature.

Just remember when upgrading your touch passed 3.11 firmware to not unpack all the firmware upgrade (I can't remember the file) .. the file to copy over is KoboRoot.tgz

3.13 I have heard brings back the chapter stats for sideloaded epubs and it appears some people have already manually upgrade to the latest firmware 3.13 with no problems

Hope that helps.

No, these stats are only in kepubs. They were removed for sideloaded books after 2.8.1 and have returned with 3.13.1.

3.11.0 is currently the latest official release for the Touch, however if you have a N905C Touch model you can sideload later Mark 4 releases onto your device. I have 3.12.1 on my Touch, I cannot comment on 3.13.1 because I have yet to test it.

Regarding backups, copy ".kobo\KoboReader.sqlite" and ".kobo\Kobo\Kobo eReader.conf" to your computer before you install any firmware. If anything goes wrong restoring these files to your Touch will probably rectify the problem.
