I thought the back issues would come in this month. But it looks like they won't actually arrive until next month, so I'm accounting for them in March after all.

And with that sleight-of-hand I'm still under budget, despite having just bought The Collected Stories of Arthur C Clarke, which is currently on offer at Amazon UK (& at Kobo UK) for just £1.99. Another use of some of my no-rush Prime shipping credits.

Oh I am so mighty tempted to pick up a Kobo gift card for myself to get all of Gail Carriger's books that are on sale. Read her Parasol Protectorate series last year, what a hoot! But didn't buy them (borrowed from library) Would love to have them all to keep and read again. Plus her Finishing School series which I haven't read yet....AAARRGGH well I've been good and it's a SALE and it's my birthday next week so I can treat myself, right??

My question is: How good is the sale, and how likely are you to re-read the series you've read once?

I think you should consider getting the series you haven't read yet, as it seems to be an author you really like.

It's definitely an author I really like and would like to re-read as well. It's a good enough sale, so I'm buying.

It's for offers like these that we resist at other times.

True! But I've no regrets since it's an author I know I like and a very significant discount. Got the whole works (8 books) for $20 total. Not bad!

Hmm, so I took a trip to Mumbai, put a book in my cart, applied a coupon... and then closed the page. I'm under budget and the book won't get cheaper, but since I didn't plan to read it right now, I backed off.

I'm getting quite disgustingly virtuous!

That is amazingly virtuous. By juggling some numbers, I'm still under budget, but I'm finding it hard.

After the first withdrawal pangs, it became easy. I'm lucky; I don't have favorite authors, so there are no new absolutely must-reads to tempt me. And the price point on new non-fiction, my biggest temptation, is prohibitive without a really, really, really good discount, and they're mostly gone.

I may regret the book I passed on if the first page coupon codes become inactive, but I can live with it. The worst case scenario is that I go to Amazon or Google and pay full price when I want to read it and I'm buying so little these days that would be entirely justifiable.

Kudos and full support to those who are struggling; I'm free-wheeling right now.

Well, I just shot my budget all to heck, but I don't think I'm going to count it at all, since it's a book bought for research for the next book I just agreed to write. Like all IT books, it's expensive, so would have shot my budget for the rest of this month and all of next month. So, I'm going to just ignore it.

The answer for me seems to be my prohibition against looking for free and bargain books. Can't be tempted by what I don't see. I've picked up some free books, and that's fine as long as I don't go looking for them. Also, buying only what I intend to read right away makes me think a bit before hitting the 'buy' button. I've bought only four books so far this year and have read all four.

I've always loved browsing at libraries and book stores, including on-line. Now I'm browsing my Calibre library. Keeps me focused on what I have instead of what I don't have.

BTW, tent camping road trips are tough on ereaders. I'm trying to toughen myself up for a long-distance back pack trip when my new knee feels less wimpy, so have been camping in and around Death Valley all this month. My ereaders have sand lodged at the bezels, and I have new appreciation for my bezel-less, mostly sand-free Kobo Aura. My Paperwhite has a new scratch on the screen so that I'm keeping the light off entirely. The good news is that when I'm ready to rejoin civilization, if ever, I have an excuse to buy a Voyage. In fact, that was the first thing I thought when the metal hit the Paperwhite screen. Tragedy turned to opportunity in a heart beat.

It seems to me there's a big difference between a book for a work project, and a book for leisure. You're quite right to ignore it.

Thanks for the confirmation, Paul. That's basically what I was figuring. There are years when I've budgeted for IT books, but I really wasn't planning on one for this year, since I didn't expect to be doing this particular book. But the one I was planning to write was delayed (software delay, not me), so the publisher asked me to fill in a slot. Which makes it a tight timeframe book and I need to get cracking almost immediately. (Well, as soon as the contract is actually signed. I don't actually write before then. Been burned. ) Which means I need to start doing some research before then.

Of course, this also means I'm not likely to be buying (or reading) as many books this spring as usual, so I guess it balances out somewhat.

I'm still buying books I'm probably not going to get to any time soon, if they're a good enough bargain. I probably need to cut that out, but it's hard when I'm actually gaining ground on my TBR. Especially when these No-Rush Shipping credits make things even more of a bargain.

Indeed. I have £9.33 in credits to spend before the end of March. Assuming I do spend it, that leaves me no more than £2.98 to spend elsewhere in March if I'm to stay under my £75 budget for Jan/Feb/Mar. (Existing spending commitments mean that I'll end March only £11.31 under budget. Add in the £9.33 Amazon credits I must spend or lose by the end of March, I'll only just squeak in under budget, I think.)
