Well they finally got to my account, with the new DRM. So long, B&N.

Luck;

NookStudy sometimes downloads ebooks as PDFs even if they are downloaded as epubs on other devices. If you use Firefox, you might want to consider using GreaseMonkey and this script to download the ebooks, or if you use Chrome, use the script with Tampermonkey.

If you have an Android tablet and the Nook App you can download them to your tablet, then use a USB connection to your computer (or Dropbox, etc., however you normally transfer files) to get them.

I haven't bought a single ebook from them since the switch.* I hope someone (who isn't brain-dead) is watching the numbers.

* I do still have the Analog/Asimov's combo subscription, but they're sold without DRM so it's not a problem.

I can download my books just fine (using the NOOK app) and I can import them into Calibre, but I can't figure out how to remove the DRM. I've put in more time than I think is worth for the outcome (four books to put onto my daughter's Kindle Fire) and I'm done with ebooks and B&N.

I was considering getting my daughter a NOOK for those books, but then I realized that the cost of repurchasing those four books is only about $32-$40, vs $90 for the NOOK, so I may just do that instead. I can't get them from Amazon, because I'm upset that they do not have the NOOK app available in their AppStore. I'll have to see what I can do with Kobo.

(I never had so much trouble with books that I bought from the Sony store! I'm probably the only person that misses them. LOL)

Have you asked for help over at Alf's? As long as they are regular epubs, you should be able to decrypt them.

Why don't you just sideload the Nook app to her Kindle Fire?

Not specifically; I read through the comments and followed some directions that seemed to fit my circumstance, but in the end, I still had locked books.

Because then I would have to go look up how to get the nook and kobo apps, learn how to sideload them to Kindle Fires, and then do it three times (for each of my kids' Kindles.)

Detailed description of DRM-removal procedures deleted by moderator

It's so much easier to just whine about it in the thread dedicted to complaining about the difficulties of maintaining a NOOK library. (I forgot how helpful everyone is around here. I should have known I wouldn't be allowed to whine in peace. )

I'll go dig around the Mobileread Amazon Kindle forums and see if there is a thread about sideloading apps. (I'm sure there must be although I haven't been in there before.) Thanks!

Ha! I can certainly understand that it could be more trouble than it's worth -- especially if it's only for a few books.

I know someone has mentioned working on an update to Alf's tools that would be able to retrieve the B&N key automatically. So you might check back there later on.

I hope this isn’t too specific to be allowed.

Last month I "bought" six free cookbooks from B&N. I used Nook Study to download them but the downloaded files were PDFs. I tried importing them into Calibre (after using Alf notes to get the new B&N key and add it to the plugin), but they remained locked; I wasn't surprised because I thought I'd read that the plugins wouldn’t work on B&N PDF files.

Last night, after reading the latest posts in this thread (post 813 specifically; bgalbrecht), I somehow muddled through the process of getting Tampermonkey and the script into Chrome and was able to download the books as epubs. This time, when I added them to Calibre, one at a time, four of the six were fine but two were still locked for some reason.

I thought I’d also read that the plugins wouldn’t work on books downloaded with Android apps (or maybe that’s just Kindle books?) but as a last resort I downloaded the two recalcitrant books into the Nook app on my Android phone (they downloaded as epubs), emailed the files to myself and saved them on my laptop. I added them to Calibre and they did get stripped. I have no idea what was different about those two books.

I don’t cook much so I may never even use the cookbooks but it gives me a great deal of satisfaction to have them under control. Without Alf and friends I would probably have stopped buying ebooks when Fictionwise died.

I got that batch of free cookbooks too. Several of them were labeled PagePerfect Nookbooks which in the past has meant pdf only (and, as you said, won't unlock with Alf's tools). I was pleasantly surprised to be able to get them as epubs by downloading them through Nook for PC. They all decrypted with no issues for me.

Incidentally, I've discovered that Nook for PC can read pdfs and even pdbs when sideloaded, but it won't download them.

Ah, I didn't even think of trying the plain Nook for PC app. That's good to know. But at least I finally managed to use Tampermonkey and the script so it was a learning experience.

Has anyone noticed that they seem to be IP checking again at B&N? I had successfully purchased and downloaded content using the tampermonkey script previously from Australia with a US address in my account but when I tried today it wouldn't let me purchase they only thing I can think of is that they've gone back to IP checking
