The snow is predicted to get heavier. Already the sidewalks and streets are covered. Most people seem to be staying home. The few cars I do see are moving very cautiously. I've decided to stay in my daughter's room tonight rather than call for a ride back to the Hospitality House. No sense in making someone drive in this if I don't have to.

A little while ago I walked out of the hospital and called my daughter's room and had her come to the window so I could wave to her. Why? Because at heart I'm just a big kid who wanted to play in the snow. I honestly felt I could walk the seven blocks to the Hospitality House, but reason told me I would probably change my mind about three blocks in, and once there I might be snowed in for a good part off the day. Still, it was nice being out in it for a few minutes. It's 20° F and the snow is predicted to fall until sunrise, followed by a chance of snow until noon.

I've already corrected ten typos (seven while typing this sentence). Any I missed, just chalk them up to Swype.

Got up to see if I was going to work - we had snow followed by sleet followed by freezing rain = every surface coated with ice, temps in the low 20's F => day at home spent chipping off the steps, cars, etc.

Record setting low temps arriving Wed & Thurs ... so much for living in the south.

You know it has been cold when...

you see the morning temperature is -20C with a windchill of -26C and think to yourself "that's not so bad".

The current temp is 20° F and there looks to be about 6-8" of snow on the ground. From the hospital room I watched a car struggle to pull off from the curb for about 15 minutes. Success came only after another motorist, presumably a hospital employee, stopped and dug the car out. Here are a couple of photos I took from just outside the Critical Care entrance.

The second shows the propeller shaft from the CSS Virginia, AKA the Merrimack of Merrimack vs the Monitor fame. I had a hell off a time uploading these photos. The iPad, in its infinite wisdom, only allows me to upload one per post.

So you had a fun time playing in the snow, but didn't actually try to go the whole 7 blocks to the hospitality house? Good thinking. I mean -- that looks like very little snow, to *me* (snicker!!

) but then I'm in Chicago. I'm laughing with you, not at you, really. It does look very pretty! And with several layers of ice that would be a problem even here -- and with a population not equipped to deal with it -- yes, just stay put as much as you can. Brrr!

Can you sneak a snowball in to your daughter?

I know our snowfall doesn't compare to Chicago (I have friends there whom I have visited at Xmas - so I know Chicago snow), but sheesh! This is NC! Something has gone terribly wrong here ... snow, sleet, freezing rain, below 0 F nights! Have I woken up in a parallel universe with the opposite weather we should be having? Late February should be in the low 50's F!

Even that little bit of tramping in the snow got it into my shoes, but it was the 20° temperature that really kept me from making the walk. I'm good for walking from between 40 to 80-some degrees, but outside that range I'm a bit uncomfortable.

Of course, when I was a kid I walked to school everyday in all kinds of weather. Then again, I had no choice.

And yes, it WAS uphill both ways!

Another bright, sunny, but very cold and windy day.

Cold enough that the snow has stayed loose, and that (thankfully) makes for easier shoveling.

Waiting for the sun to finish melting ice on the roads so I can safely drive in to work.

What about snow plows & municipal/state road crews you ask?
They stay on the interstates, and do not venture into neighborhoods.
Result = main routes are squeaky clear, but you can't get to them without risking your life.

I can think of fewer jobs I'd hate doing today than driving a bus. When I consider that Ralph Kramden was a New Yorker, I don't think we ever gave that guy enough respect!

I had a dream last night. In my dream I looked out the bedroom window on the rear of the house and saw some deer. As I usually do when I see deer in the back yard, I raised the window and then slammed it down. This startled the deer and they ran away from the house, into deeper and deeper snow. First they were up to their knees, then their shoulders, then their heads, and finally, I could just see the tips of their antlers breaking through the surface of the snow and streaming away.

I think I'm ready for spring.
