Just finished cleaning off the driveway - it's what I call 'heart attack' snow - thick ice crust over soggy heavy snow that sticks to the pavement and to your shovel. But with a week of 0 F or below night freezes coming up, I knew whatever I left today would stay put until at least next Monday. So crack the ice with the shovel and push the sludgy mess to the side, repeat, repeat ... more leg work than back strain ...
I'm very proud of the ice river I created at the bottom of the driveway (which runs downhill at around a 45 degree angle) - to direct the melt water into tire ruts in the street leading into a storm drain. Whew! Off to sit against several heating pads and swill a Guinness! N.B. The ice crust was still so thick (at 1:00 in full sunshine & 37 F) that walking on it did not break through - it was like a skating rink. |

Yeah, even 37F isn't enough to melt very much. We've had a few 39 degree days (quite nice!) and most of our 18 inch snowfall is still right there, thank you very much. It's compacted into itself, and is down to a more dense 12 inches. The places where it was plowed and piled up are still 5 and 6 feet high. We are back down in the teens for temperatures now, and heading for the singles and 0 for the weekend. So the snow is likely to be a landscape feature for the next month or so.
Back in Pennsylvania, and in the 1970's and me at age 15 or so, I *did* pull out the ice skates for an ice topped snow fall such as you've got. But you aren't supposed to have it down there in North Carolina!! Take care, stay warm, and try not to have to go anywhere! |

Can't sleep (again) so I guess I'll watch some movie. Hopefully after that I can close my eyes and drift off...

![]() And yes, I was too lazy to go back indoors & get the PAM to spray the shovel. Instead I perfected the push, tilt, tap technique - no lifting. |

Packing for a trip to London.
My sister is coming, too. We decided to take only one check in bag, since we're only going for two nights. I have a set of three suitcases and I thought the medium size would be plenty big enough but my sister insists on taking the huge one. I just packed the stuff I can pack, tomorrow I'll add my toiletries and charger. I still have over half of my allotted space left (and I took the smaller half). |

yAy snow! Oh shoot it all melted on the way. Our winter is pathetic. If you Google Snoqualmie central that's where I and a bunch of other people aren't teaching or doing any other sort of work right now

Note to self: next time book a flight around noon!
My alarm went off at 5am, which is just way too early. But I'm up and about and in another 45 minutes we're off to the airport. Last night, after seeing how much stuff my sister wanted to take, which wasn't that much, I demanded we take my medium sized suitcase instead of the "steamer trunk". There's still some space left, so if she wants to buy new sneakers she can. I'm now trying to decide if I need to put more books on my Kindle and if so which books. |
