I just want some nice reading software that is supported by the manufacturer.
The recent versions are working with the H2o, including the current version. I thought you had a Glo? There is no "jailbreaking" involved. The device firmware should not be an issue, as long as we are talking reasonably current.

Koreader is nice reading software, supported by ~29 programmers from all around the world. There have been features discussed here at MR that became a part of the software within the matter of days. It has been under a constant development, improvement and now includes a number of unique features. It has a number of functions that work with calibre and its metadata. The OPDS support allows wireless acquisition of ebooks from free online catalogs. I have been using it as my main reading software for many months now.

I do have a Glo. I'm interested in the Voyage and PW2014 also. I'm much more interested in koreader on Kindles than Kobos.

I'm trying to spend more time on ebook reading and not getting my time diverted to reading software/firmware (hence my original post to a straight forward guide for the Voyage.)

There are references to the Kindle version at the Wiki. Including links to discussion forums and installation instructions. Is the Voyage even available yet?

arspr, if your Aura HD is no longer under warranty and you feel brave enough you could try opening up your device - I'm guessing that there are some instructions somewhere on this forum - and checking the internals for anything that may have come loose. Just be careful, and take your time, with your poking around.

Despite my anger with Kobo, my decision is 95% made: Kobo Aura H2O.
  • 6.8" is a nearly decisive advantage. My PRS-650 really looks small. (Size matters, don't deceive yourselves... ).
  • The previous statement is more prominent because the absurdly big margins Kindles have. FullScreenReading=true is nearly heaven in Kobos.
  • W&O do not work in either devices (I'm talking about kepubs in Kobos)
  • Although I'm not a huge pdf or comic reader, this is also a stronger point in Kobos
  • ToCs are flattened in Kobos. Ok, but they are just crippled in Kindles...
  • I don't like azw3 format. I prefer editing epubs. I don't like the contained files losing their names...
  • Ok, I don't agree with some (or lots) of Kobo software "oddities", but I'm more or less used to them and I do fear possible Kindle ones.

So let's think my bad experience about building quality has been because of my fault somehow, or just bad luck which won't happen again...

I'm too clumsy to a do-it-your-self repair. More over, unless fully evident, I won't know what to fix!!

I do not find my Aura HD purchase invoice/bill/receipt!!!

I'm fully stupid... I don't know if I would be able to make any official/legal/whatever reclamation without it.

You can sell it on Ebay or this forum's flea market for parts. Someone could buy it for battery.

If you remember where you bought it from, perhaps they would still have a record, especially in the case of logging into online stores.

Those straight lines really don't look like screen damage to me, but it's hard to tell because we can't see the full screen. They could just be extending lines from a break on the bottom half of the screen. If the lines look like that straight down to the bottom of the screen, it might be something like the controller that went bad.

But it might be worth calling Kobo and giving them the serial number of the reader and see what they say. Perhaps they could track down the sale date if purchased from them and at least let you know if it's under warranty or not.

And make sure you save your receipt next time! I even now scan paper receipts for locally purchased electronics so I always can find it in the event of warranty issues.

Yes, that's what I thought.

I've sent an e-mail to both ayuda.es@kobobooks.com and my on-line retailer (www.redcoon.es). But I'm not really confident about getting a solution (less about a FREE solution)...

OTOH, at last I've just bought an Aura H2O in MediaMarkt... and WOW!!!, Carta is clearly better than Pearl, both whiter and blacker as announced.

If someone is thinking about saving 10 $/€/£ in an HD versus an H2O, DON'T DO IT. HD is dead, long life to H2O...

Well regardless of how you got here, I think you will find the H2O to be far superior. Just remember to dry the back if you do get it wet due to reading pool/beach side.

And I know how disappointing things are when something stops working due to any number of reasons, especially if reading is a passion as it is for most of us here.

regards

Well, I've contacted both my on-line retailer and Kobo help service. And the results are:
  • www.redcoon.es: They've launched the return for repair process. They've even sent me a duplicate of the original invoice. (Because of several reasons I'm sending back my HD next Wednesday). Till now, I can only say GOOD JOB.
(In case you don't know: In Spain, and I suppose in UE, the default minimum warranty period is 2 years).
  • Kobo service: Their answer has been "Could you try a factory reset?" when I had previously told them that my screen is fully blocked and that I had already done a light+power manual factory reset...

I'm glad you could finally get some help. Hopefully they will replace your HD so you"ll have a back up ereader.

And as for Kobo, it's about par for the course

I'm a little surprised actually. The customer service folks I dealt with concerning my non-charging HD weren't nearly that dense.

Yes. I think I posted it somewhere. In redcoon I had to wait about one and a half month (they warned me nevertheless). As HD was declared unrepairable and discontinued I paid 10€ (the difference with an H2O) and got a brand new one.

The Aura HD may be inferior to the H2O, but the HD is a LIMITED EDITION!
