I have attached an updated version of the guide I am writing for this, I am on step 14. How do I proceed to backup my current data and copy the partition and kernel files onto the kindle? My instinct is to use the command above to make the kindle writeable and then go to the root directory, but after that I'm stumped.
I had the same NOTICE NOTICE NOTICE message.
I just ignored it. As Step 14. It worked fine (previous message)

(I assume the version number above is a typo.)

KUAL is just a document, put it in your documents folder.
Find it shown on your main screen like any other document.

Your device **must** have been jailbroken **prior to** being updated to the 5.6.x series of firmware.

If the jailbreak that was used was the most recent, then everything that KUAL requires to run was saved across the upgrade.
Also, some of the less recent versions of the jailbreak can be restored by NiLuJe's "hotfix".

I had a jailbroken Version of 5.4.x But sadly the device made a ota-update to 5.6.1.0.2
When i start KUAL (it worked before the ota-update), there comes a message that "Mobileread Kindlet Kit" is not installed.

Will try the hotfix in the meantime...

Besides, thx for the quick reply!

I'm using justin's guide and I have a couple questions.

When I get to the SSH part, am I just really entering command lines?

Is each line in the the guide a command in itself?

So In step 15
"zcat /mnt/us/mmcblk0p1.bin.gz| dd of=/dev/mmcblk0p1 bs=4096"
is one long command?

And in step 17
rm /mnt/us/ENABLE_DIAGS
idme -d --bootmode main
reboot

Is three different commands?

Also if I downgrade, will I need to rejailbreak and reinstall the file that prevents amazon from autoupdating?

Thanks

4/ Step 14 of the TXT : I didn't know how to backup, so I crossed my fingers and ignored this step.
5/ Step 17 : /mnt/us/ENABLE_DIAGS didn't exist, somehow it was already deleted. I still typed the command, and continued.
Thanks for the step 11 tip, I had the same issue

Same for me on step 14, I forgot to look into it until it might have been too late and I ignored it and ENABLE_DIAGS also didn't exist anymore, I guess installing the firmware wiped it clean

All in all, thanks to everyone here, I got mine running 5.4 and collection manager, so important for managing a large collection of books

Thanks KNC1 for answering my questions. I always like to know what I'm doing when I'm messing around with technology for the first time. I'm competent enough to follow directions and research what I'm doing, but I'm far from an expert.

That was easy to do -
you already understood everything, only needed the confirmation.

Other times, other posters -
not quite so easy
(Directions? You mean read the file called: README, that those are the directions? Who? Me? etc. {and other "human nature" things} )

My kindle pw2 is now 5.6.2.1.
I tried to copy the rescue bin file to Kindle ( H : ) folder, and follow settings>Update kindle is not active and then I see that rescue bin file was deleted by kindle.
I didn't pass first one.

Information please:
* Had it been jail broken before the update to 5.6.2.1?
* Any idea what version of the jail break was on it?

I think, it hadn't been jail broken, my kindle was second hand and I upgraded it as soon as buying. Has it be jail broken before? Any way to downgrade
Thanks for your interest.

Everything begins with jailbreaking your Kindle.

firmware 5.6.x cannot be jailbroken unless you are comfortable performing the jailbreak over a serial port -- i.e. hardware modding.

You said you upgraded it as soon as you bought it -- bad move.
