Hi,
I have serious issues with my Glo. I guess the battery is defect and it runs just on cable. But the bigger problem is, that is bricked. Can I get the originals SD image for the Glo? Please? Thank you! |

Hi Everyone. New to mobileread and got here through an extensive search for help with my current problem. I think I am in the right place for help with this, if not may someone please give me some tips on what next.
I have three dedicated ereaders in the house. Not counting iPads, phones, etc. Two Kobo Touch One Kobo Glo - model N613 The Kobo Glo is new/use one that I bought locally a few days ago. The person I got it from said that it was too much tech for her and she preferred paperbacks. Ha! that's what my wife said before I got her a Kobo Touch, and now she doesn't go anywhere without it. A n ee w aaa ys. Back to the new2me Kobo Glo. I can't get it to boot and work. I have experienced all of the symptoms spread throughout this thread. At the beginning when I first plugged it in, it went into the "restoring" screen and hung there. Then it changed to the graphic connect to computer screen. When I connect it to the computer it goes back to restoring screen. After it doing that for awhile it finally connected and was discovered by the computer. I opened the desktop app on my Mac and proceeded with the setup of the Kobo. It downloaded an update and then the Kobo rebooted. It then went into a fritz of fits of blinking between an "updating" screen and the restoring screen. When it finally stopped, it was a stable blank white screen. When I slide to power on, it went back into the restoring screen and stayed there. I then tried the prescribed resets. paper clip poking through the hole in the bottom. holding the light button and power on button. No change. power on and goes to restoring. After trying resets a number of times. Then came nothing. when I plug it into the computer, the LED blue comes on for a few second then goes out. blank white screen. nothing else. when I slide for power on, the blue LED comes on for few seconds and then goes out. nothing else. blank white screen. Is this what folks refer to as being "bricked"? Next I was thinking well maybe there is a serious problem with the SD card, possibly corrupted from all the plugging and unplugging and updating fritz etc. Maybe it has been toast from the beginning and the previous owner had similar problems getting it to work and dumped it to me? So, I opened the Kobo and removed the card and plugged the card into my computer. I could see the card and contents from the computer slot and so promptly copied the files over. thinking how smart I am and got it now - I try to "fix" the SD card, I re-partitioned and then reformatted it and copied the files back onto the card. Did it work? No. Same results. Blank screen and blue LED for a few seconds, nothing else. You can guess why .... After reading (ALOT) through posts and especially here, I come to understand there are two Linux and one DOS partitions on the SD card. With partitions and specific files that cannot normally be seen by the computer. So I guess that means I REALLY messed it up my Kobo Glo is now dead forever, bricked, unless I have a restored card? My search for knowledge, answers, and help has brought me to here. My last hope seems to be to start from scratch with a blank "image". I understand the concept of a drive image. Posts here indicate I could get and try a virgin image and put that onto my card and try it. Where do I get an image for the Kobo Glo? And how do I put it on the card? I am using an iMac, and I will use a brand new SD Card. Help? Thoughts? Tips? Where to next? Last edited by ClaudeP; 02-03-2015 at 10:05 PM. |

ClaudeP: You have done everything you can to get it going. By the sounds of it, it had already been messed up by the previous owner.
You should be able to get it going by restoring an image to the SD card. Using a new one is a good idea in case the other was faulty. I have sent you a PM with the link to the image. For instructions, see Memory Upgrade Mod Guide (With Pictures). You already know how to open it, but it has the instructions for restoring the image and links to the tools needed. |

Thank you very much David for the encouragement and the help links.
![]() I will look at the how-to link and download the file you PM'd to me. Hope it works, crossing my fingers. I will post back here with results after a few hours of tinkering with it. ...... Update. I have great news! I now have a working Kobo Glo ![]() Thank you so very very much for the SD card image. It was relatively simple to do by following the instructions in the link provided. I did discover in this process that the SD card that was in the Kobo did indeed have problems with it. I could not image it, nor reformat it. I had two extra SD cards here (a 2Gb and a 4Gb) and imaged both of them. I put the 4Gb in the Kobo, and it started right up. I put the 2Gb, same thing it started right up. The 2Gb, I put in the store box for safe keeping should I ever have this problem again. The 4Gb is in and Kobo has updated, loaded all 246 books and is working, YAY! Thanks again. This is a great website for TONS of information. Glad I landed here, and will be cruising through often. TTFN! PPS - sorry for long posts. But hopeful it will be helpful for the next person searching to fix theirs. Last edited by ClaudeP; 02-04-2015 at 12:56 AM. |

New info to look at and consider if you are having problems with your Glo.
Discovered this last night with my repaired Kobo Glo after I put the case cover back on it. If when you turn on your Kobo Glo it goes into the "restoring" screen. And does that each time you turn it on. Check for this simple thing ...... Check the light button on top of the Glo. When you depress it, there should be distinctive movement and a micro button click. If there is no click, it could be stuck depressed, or as in my case the back cover installed the tightness of the frame made the button push down. Here is what happens. If the light button is stuck on, and you power on your glow. It activates the factory reset/restore of the Glo. So long as the button is stuck, every time you turn on the Glo - it will go into restoring screen. And appear stuck or faulty. Meaning, there may actually be nothing wrong with your Glo SD card. It is just the light button that is stuck. The fix? ... Pretty simple, what I did. Slip a thin knife into the crack between the back cover and the frame at the top and in the middle near the light button. Pry it open a bit. Slip a small folded piece of sheet paper into the crack, to create space clearance for the button. (see! paper is still good for something!). Voila, the button is no longer pressed down by the tight fit of the frame. it now has clearance and 'clicks' properly on/off. And the Kobo powers up perfectly every time. Something simple to check before diving into SD partitioning and imaging what may be an otherwise perfectly functioning unit. Hope it helps! . . . Last edited by ClaudeP; 02-04-2015 at 08:45 PM. |

Kobo Glo doesn't work
Hi,
I have serious issues with my Glo. It runs just on cable, because when I unplug the usb cable, the screen is frozen and it doesn't respond to the touches. I think that I need to restore the originals SD image for the Glo. Could you help me ? Thank you! PS: I think that my problem is due to the last automatic firmware upgrade. Is it possible ? |

I installed the image and it basically works. But the problem with the battery still exists. Thats very annoying and disappointing since thats the 2nd Kobo in a year which makes trouble.
lf60 obviously seems to run into same issues. Goodbye Kobo. I try other brand. ![]() Anyway, Thanks for your help! |

Thnx ClaudeP for your hint. Actually it was the light button which was creating the problem being srucked. My kobo glo was automatically restarting time and again. I partitioned the SD card and copied the factory image again and again. But even it was restoring after small time use. However after getting the clue from ClaudeP...I just cleaned the motherboard and light switch with ceanilng liquid and dried with hair dryer. Now its working well. Giving no more trouble.

I have sent you a PM with the link to the image and that is probably what is needed. Using a new SD card might also be a good idea.

Ok, I've flashed the SD, put it back in the slot. But it wont start. Upon pressing the pinhole, now the blue light goes on, then the green flashes a few times and that's all.
It seems that Glo is trying to say something ![]() I've tried another SD, same result. What do you think ? is it realy dead ? |
