I tried the just released official 0.8.4 and the legacy 0.8.4 both fail with the same error. At least 0.8.1 still works! But why does 0.8.1 work when later ones fail?

The suggestions from all were appreciated!

There's quite a few changes in the Qt5 being delivered with Sigil from 0.8.1 to 0.8.3/4. Maybe there's something there. I assume you've tried a full uninstall of the older version of Sigil (and perhaps even a cleanup of Sigil's Local Settings directory) before installing 0.8.3/4?

I've compiled a version of 0.8.4 in which the Sigil binary is flagged as not being compatible with Windows' Data Execution Prevention (/NXCOMPAT:NO). If you're willing to try it, I'll provide a link to download it. I don't expect it to actually work, but rather, I expect it to crash without any interference from DEP. The hope is that the crash info is more forthcoming about where the problem might lie.

Let me know if you want to try it. I'll PM you a link. No pressure. I'd make it public, but there's frankly no reason for this version to be installed except for debugging purposes.

I did not uninstall 0.8.1, but instead installed 0.8.3/4 in a separate directory. calibre uses QT5 but I have no issues with it.

I would recommend uninstalling the old version to be sure. Even though they're installed to two different locations, they're still sharng the same config directory in AppData/local. If you want to keep two separate versions installed, I'd suggest using Portable versions only.

Also ... the Qt5 that calibre distributes is custom-compiled (and I don't think it's yet based on Qt 5.4 -- but I could be wrong). Sigil distributes the available precompiled versions of Qt 5 with its releases.

I fully expected that special version to crash as well. I was just trying to get it to do so without Data Execution Prevention getting in the way. That seemed to work, but quite frankly, I was expecting one of the qt modules to be at fault, not ntdll. That doesn't seem to shed much light on things, sorry (except that a hardware/driver related issue is likely). That's an access violation of some kind. Thanks for trying it and reporting back, though.

If it's any comfort, Gunner, there was one Sigil release that kept crashing on my XP machine. I was regularly told that I was doing something wrong, but nothing helped and I finally reverted to the earlier version, which worked fine -- and so did the following release.

Question Appearance Settings

Sorry, I can't really help more, other than to say, the likelihood of the Sigil code base with the latest compilers in 2015 exactly matching a problem in 2011 or 2009 seems quite remote, meaning that the issue if probably something else on your system and not Sigil.
@KevinH
@DiapDealer

I agree not Sigil. The appearance setting is a "theme"? I did not have "Windows Aero" available in themes.

Aero's a bit tricky. If you right click on your desktop and then choose "Personalize" from the resulting context menu, you'll want to select "Window Color and Appearance" from the list of choices. Once you're in the "Window Color and Appearance" settings, you should see an "Open classic appearance properties for more color options" link at the bottom (if you don't see that link, you probably already have Aero turned off). If you click that link, you should then see a list of color schemes in a list box that you can select. Select "Windows Vista Basic" and click OK.

Your SFC scan seems to show an issue with the Windows Sidebar. Have you tried closing the sidebar (right-click in the sidebar) before launching Sigil to see if it works? (You can turn it on again by typing "sidebar" in the Start->Run textbox).

It was "Windows Aero"!
Clean install of Sigil 0.8.4 works like a champ!
I do not use Windows Sidebar, though I did find it. Turning it on and then off, cold booting between changes still has the items in "sfc /scannow" failing...

Thanks to ALL!

Hmmm. Glad that got 0.8.3/4 working for you, but I don't think disabling Aero should be be required. In fact I have Aero turned on my Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 32-bit with no issues. I'm still leaning toward a conflict between video hardware/drivers and something in the precompiled Qt 5.4.0 binaries. Perhaps it will be remedied in an update to Qt 5 down the road.

But if you're happy, I'm ecstatic!
