I tried the just released official 0.8.4 and the legacy 0.8.4 both fail with the same error. At least 0.8.1 still works! But why does 0.8.1 work when later ones fail?
The suggestions from all were appreciated! |

There's quite a few changes in the Qt5 being delivered with Sigil from 0.8.1 to 0.8.3/4. Maybe there's something there. I assume you've tried a full uninstall of the older version of Sigil (and perhaps even a cleanup of Sigil's Local Settings directory) before installing 0.8.3/4?

I've compiled a version of 0.8.4 in which the Sigil binary is flagged as not being compatible with Windows' Data Execution Prevention (/NXCOMPAT:NO). If you're willing to try it, I'll provide a link to download it. I don't expect it to actually work, but rather, I expect it to crash without any interference from DEP. The hope is that the crash info is more forthcoming about where the problem might lie.
Let me know if you want to try it. I'll PM you a link. No pressure. I'd make it public, but there's frankly no reason for this version to be installed except for debugging purposes. |

Also ... the Qt5 that calibre distributes is custom-compiled (and I don't think it's yet based on Qt 5.4 -- but I could be wrong). Sigil distributes the available precompiled versions of Qt 5 with its releases. Quote:

I fully expected that special version to crash as well. I was just trying to get it to do so without Data Execution Prevention getting in the way. That seemed to work, but quite frankly, I was expecting one of the qt modules to be at fault, not ntdll. That doesn't seem to shed much light on things, sorry (except that a hardware/driver related issue is likely). That's an access violation of some kind. Thanks for trying it and reporting back, though.

If it's any comfort, Gunner, there was one Sigil release that kept crashing on my XP machine. I was regularly told that I was doing something wrong, but nothing helped and I finally reverted to the earlier version, which worked fine -- and so did the following release.

@DiapDealer I agree not Sigil. The appearance setting is a "theme"? I did not have "Windows Aero" available in themes. Last edited by Gunnerp245; 02-08-2015 at 08:42 AM. |

Your SFC scan seems to show an issue with the Windows Sidebar. Have you tried closing the sidebar (right-click in the sidebar) before launching Sigil to see if it works? (You can turn it on again by typing "sidebar" in the Start->Run textbox). |

@KevinH @DiapDealer It was "Windows Aero"! Clean install of Sigil 0.8.4 works like a champ! ![]() I do not use Windows Sidebar, though I did find it. Turning it on and then off, cold booting between changes still has the items in "sfc /scannow" failing... ![]() Thanks to ALL! ![]() Last edited by Gunnerp245; 02-08-2015 at 01:17 PM. |
