"Waldo" is used to refer to remote manipulators used to handle radioactive or other hazardous substances. The term "Waldo" comes from the story Waldo by Robert A. Heinlein which features a man who invents and uses such devices.

I've known this for many, many years, but it's nice to have Wikipedia back it up:

And most chimney sweeps in the old days were young children who were small of build and often underfed. I understand that sometimes they got stuck and died in the chimneys back then as well.

That kind of thing should never have happened at the time it did. It seems like the mistakes and cruelties of a barbaric society always comes in cycles. Abusive child labor is something I don't realistically expect to see in my lifetime, but after I'm dead, and in a few centuries, who knows?
