Yet ANOTHER Harper Lee Novel!

Atticus and Scout and Jem are such wonderful characters that I don't want my ideas about them to change because of this new-old book.

I do have concerns about this, I must admit. I was surprised when I read the statement from Miss Lee that accompanied the article, because it seemed so well thought out and complete for an 88 year-old who's had a stroke. It doesn't seem natural.

"In the mid-1950s, I completed a novel called 'Go Set a Watchman,'" the 88-year-old Lee said in a statement issued by Harper. "It features the character known as Scout as an adult woman, and I thought it a pretty decent effort. My editor, who was taken by the flashbacks to Scout's childhood, persuaded me to write a novel (what became 'To Kill a Mockingbird') from the point of view of the young Scout.

"I was a first-time writer, so I did as I was told. I hadn't realized it (the original book) had survived, so was surprised and delighted when my dear friend and lawyer Tonja Carter discovered it. After much thought and hesitation, I shared it with a handful of people I trust and was pleased to hear that they considered it worthy of publication. I am humbled and amazed that this will now be published after all these years."

It wasn't an off the cuff remark. It was a prepared statement. People do edit and revise and get help from people they trust.

Yes, I realize it was a prepared statement. I just wonder if it was actually her statement in any way at all.

I haven't read it either, although I do have it (it was free at Amazon UK at some point last year). Doesn't have the "cult" status here in the UK that it has in the US.

I must have missed the offer. Perhaps I'll wait until it's free again, or get it through my Amazon Prime monthly book borrow. (As I doubt I'll want to keep it.)

I honestly can't remember if I read it or not, but it was a VERY good movie.

I don't remember that episode. But I do vaguely remember one where Niles has a talking parrot and it constantly flies around the room and lands on his (Niles') head. If memory serves, the episode was called To Mock a Killingbird.

The only thing I find alarming is the tabloid-like fud and word twisting on the part of the author.
The editor they insisted on interviewing is saying outright that he doesn't speak directly with Lee and is clearly not the decision maker on deals, and is apparently not doing any actual editing on this book. They work through her lawyer, and he's conveying what he's heard of that second hand info as honestly as he can. Big deal.
