I actually just use them for reading in bed.

But I had a 350 which I used to take out and about nude. Survived fine and is still fine AFAIK (I sold it to a friend who carried it everywhere until it was recently stolen by a family member at his fathers funeral.
Not many cases can protect you from that.

For reading in bed I do like the sleep cover, but I also like the lighter without one aspect.

They do have a back cover BTW.

It is like buying an additional warranty, which will statistically add 30% to the price of electronics over time.

I have had one damaged reader out of 12 that I can recall. Was a Kobo mini which I bought for $39.95 and still sells for that price. Could have bought covers for them all and warrantees as well for under $300 and been out a mere $260.

I don't even have a cover for my much more expensive Surface Pro 3. Yard it around in a mailing bubble wrap envelope

Thanks for the reply, Helen...
It looks like I probably don't need a case since I will only use my T3s in the house and on the porch...when it warms up around here! Oddly enough I have Never damaged any of my ereaders..so am knocking on wood for the T3s. I hope I enjoy it as much as you enjoy yours!!

Wow, I am shocked at how fragile many of you are finding your ereader devices. I have been carrying a PRS-505 daily for years ever since it first showed up in Canada, mostly in my bag and sometimes in my pocket, and it has survived many impacts without damage to the screen. The same goes for the T3 that replaced it a few months ago.

Mind you, I try to keep less than 100 books on the device at any one time, so even a total loss isn't heartbreaking to me.

OK, heard back from Sony, they say the screen is customer damage, and beyond economical repair. Agent was sympathetic, but tried to justify that even slightest bend can damage a screen this way, and a slight knock to the pocket may have been sufficient. I argued that though I was half-expecting this result, if e-readers aren't for carrying in the pocket, and given this model is sold on the feature it comes with own protective cover, it seems a harsh stance. He said I can appeal in writing via Customer Services, which I might do, but also said they don't have any refurb/replacement offer available.

As I've got the Kindle Touch anyway and spent £9 on decent cover (leather, reduced from £40) I think I'm done, as I had everything backed up in Calibre. I did have a trip today to see the better models out there, couldn't see the Voyage on display, but saw Paperwhite, and also Kobo H2o, and to be honest side-by-side, with the Touch it's hard to justify the cost. There is a £20 voucher back offer in Argos currently, but then you need to buy a case on top, and given this experience I'd need to get a good one.

But the thing I really miss is the hardware page-turn buttons. Also so disappointed they've dropped audio from Kindle high-end as I have a lot on Audible as well, and this could have sold the Voyager to me overall.

I agree the KT is the best for your money (from Amazon). Mine is still going strong, and the only reason to upgrade would be for the light. But then you lose audio (never used, so YMMV as to needing it), home button, and the easy hackability. Including the ability for USB Downloader mode in case Kubrick becomes necessary.

I've had multiple Sony Readers. I've had a 500, 505, 650, & T1. Not a single one ever had a broken screen. I did carry them around with me. But NEVER in a pocket. So I would not say the Kindle Touch is better than any Sony Reader in terms of breakability.

Having bought a T1 a couple of years ago and never used it for ebooks (I wanted it for an outdoor tool for emails and web browsing) I now think it is more comfortable for reading than my brand new Kindle Voyage.

OK it does not have the back light - but it is more comfortable to hold and fits my jacket pocket more easily. It also has a decent inbuilt sorting system when fed by Calibre.

I also like the page turning buttons and I do find the Voyage ones too insensitive.

I am sure you will. Far my favorite reader.

Nothing against and the sleep cover is convenient, but it is also nice to have the book cover image displayed for those of us with more than one reader.

I have had some pretty pricey electronics that broke or got stolen over the years, or worse, became obsolete in a short time. In zero cases would a cover or an extended warranty have helped. Home insurance did though

Hard for me to get real excited over possible damage to a $40-$150 item. Would be mildly upset of course, but wouldn't lose sleep.

I am sure you will enjoy your T3 every bit as much. Not perfect but perfect enough.

My mother managed to break her kindle keyboard, which she was very careful of, and had a (to me) cumbersome, humongous leather padded case which she never took it out of. Still somehow the screen substrate cracked. She treated it as if it was made of gold. Stuff happens.

Aside for the Anecdotal Fallacy not being any sort of proof -- did I somehow accidentally imply that I had any sort of opinion on the relative durability of different branded ereaders?

No... I didn't. So, please do me the favor of not challenging me on something I did not, in fact, say.

Note that I do believe Amazon is better than Sony in terms of CS. Feel free to argue with me on that -- at least this I actually said.

Well my Sony T3s(the one without the front cover) has arrived and I am thrilled with it!! I have been fiddling with it for a couple of days now and even reading the manual . I popped the micro sd card from my old T1 into it and all the books immediately transferred on the spot! Really like the size of it...maybe its the smaller size that makes the buttons so much easier to reach..at least for me. I really do like turning the pages by button control. I won't go on and on, but just wanted to mention that I am very glad that I bought this T3s. So count me as one who still loves her Sony.
