Cripes-Are eReaders Complicated

Hi All, You can call me Ray and I am a complete virgin to electronic books.

After reading umpteen reviews of umpteen products, it sounded like an eReader would be a good thing to have. So, off to the Kobo store to purchase a water-proof model, as I enjoy reading in the bath. Ordered and waiting.

Come here from a google link and am glad to have found your forum, well maybe. After wading through this thread and that one, my head is spinning.

Do these things (eReaders) take a great deal of maintenance and tweaking, or can they be purchased, plugged in and work worry free as any paper book would? Header this, grayed out that, upgrade forced or freely accepted, etc..........

Sure hope someone can put me at rest or maybe make an offer on a new unused, still in box H2O.

Hi Ray and welcome to MobileRead. I have had very few probs with my Sony and have read tons of books on it. You should post your question on our Kobo section to get a quick and helpful response.

Hi, Pulpwood, welcome to MobileRead.

Don't worry, we were all new once but rest assured, they are very easy to use, with little hassle (unless you decide to stop by our developer forums ).

You might also be interested in our Flea Market subforum.

Anyway, while you are here in the introductions forum, why don't you tell us more about yourself? What is your taste in books, etc.

Book taste is much like food taste, all over the place. Leave out the love-lorn stuff and I can usually enjoy it. Long ago while traveling a lot by car, listened to Tony Hillerman books. Like to read "First They Killed My Father" every now and then for a reality check, by Loung Ung. So many self helpers and DIYers. Way back in the day were a lot of Lous L'amour, Koontz, Clancy, and could go on all night. I am older fella so have probably over a thousand finished.

Thanks for the welcome.

Hi Ray, and welcome.

To answer your question: You can definitely use your Kobo reader right out of the box. I used my Aura HD for a few months like that before I began tweaking it with the help of the great patches provided by GeoffC. Now I wouldn't want to miss those tweaks, but I definitely did enjoy reading on my device before I had installed them.
