I doubt I would have made it through it if I had been reading it, but I have discovered my taste in audiobooks is different than regular books. The person reading this book was very good at giving distinct voices to the many different characters and handled the humor very well.

I can definitely see myself listening to one of these books every six months or so, the same way I slowly worked through the 'Royal Spyness' Series of murder mysteries by Rhys Bowen until I was caught up.

How are the footnotes handed in the audiobook version?

The more humorous style of this book. For reading that doesn't really appeal to me. But when I'm in the car and with a good narrator, I enjoy it a lot more.

I believe footnotes are completely ignored in this audiobook or they are incorporated in such a manner as not to come across as footnotes.

I pretty much require humor or very fast-pacing for audio. I tend to skip over boring parts when reading and I can't do that with audio so I've learned to get short stories, humor or thrillers.

I really enjoy the audio book version of The Last Continent. It's got some of the best UUWizard interaction of the whole series, IMO, and the narrator--Tony Robinson?--milks it for all he's worth.

I should add they're quite advanced readers, so read well above their age.
Book One: The Colour of Money

Book Two: The Light Fantastic

There is a very well done move version of both books on one DVD. I highly enjoyed watching it. So if you do decide to skip those books, have your kids at least watch the movies before reading Equal Rites

Here si the link to amazon.com where you can buy The Color of Magic. http://www.amazon.com/The-Color-Magi.../dp/B002436WFI

Unless you particularly want a Diskworld book I suggest

- Truckers, Diggers, and Wings - they are also available collected together as The Bromeliad Trilogy

- Carpet People

- The Amazing Maurice... - I can't remember the rest of the title

They are said to be YA, but I read them in my late sixties, and thoroughly enjoyed them.

The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents is set on the Discworld as well.

(In fact, in Reaper Man Maurice is mentioned as well:

Quote:
“Yes,” said the Senior Wrangler. “We don’t need to do that. We get over most things. Dragons, monsters. Rats. Remember the rats last year? Seemed to be everywhere. Lord Vetinari wouldn’t listen to us, oh no. He paid that glib bugger in the red and yellow tights a thousand gold pieces to get rid of ’em.”
“It worked, though,” said the Lecturer in Recent Runes.
“Of course it bloody worked,” said the Dean. “It worked in Quirm and Sto Lat as well. He’d have got away with it in Pseudopolis as well if someone hadn’t recognized him. Mr. so-called Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents!”
)

Yep, I second the recommendation for The Amazing Maurice... and the Tiffany Aching series. I was slightly younger than that when I read Thief of Time but, while it's still my favourite Discworld books, it's probably not the best introduction to the series. They might also enjoy Nation?
