I haven't bought books from Kobo for a while, the last time I travel to India, I could buy books in India using the coupon codes. This time, I tried buying in India, the coupon codes cannot be used in India, etc. Has Kobo put a stop to the "traveling" option?

@leitz no, but the Contest codes can only be used in the UK CA and US.

That limits the options to a low percentage of books that the codes will work on, and usually none of the books I'm interested in are publisher discount allowed and therefore don't allow codes.

I've started borrowing paper books from my Library again. Suits me fine, so I don't lose out - but kobo does.

As you pointed out, the coupon codes cannot be used on the major publishers and most of those codes that I get are under 30%. This Kobo contest is kind of pointless since I cannot use the coupon codes to buy a book from Random House, Penguin, etc. I will be quite happy to be able to use a under 30% coupon code for a ebook from a major publisher at Kobo. Unfortunately, Kobo does not offer any discounts at all for their ebooks.

I guess I need to start looking for a different online book store. I found Books-A-Million (http://www.booksamillion.com/) that offers as little as 10% discount for a ebook from a major publisher which I will be happy to buy but Books-A-Million only sell ebooks to US customers and not Canadians or international customers.

It's only the contest codes that no longer work outside US/UK/Canada, the other codes still work in other countries.

You can use the non-contest codes on Random House and penguin books at Kobo In New Zealand for example.

Spoke to Kobo Customer Service. They said there was "something wrong" with the file and processed a refund.

The book was a Smashwords book. My experience has been that Kobo is much, much slower than any other retailer in getting Smashwords releases up -- and I've never had a problem with downloading them from anyone but Kobo.

It's not a problem -- I was buying the book on a whim -- it's just the continuing frustration of ordering a book and never really knowing if I'm going to get it.

You might try google play. They do some discounting, although I've only just started browsing there so I don't know the extent of discounts on the big 6.

Kobo isn't allowed to discount the books as I understand it (they are under something similar to the agency thing that went on in US). When those coupons worked, they most likely were not supposed to work so Kobo was probably losing a lot of money on them!

You might also look into SCRIBD. Several major publishers are there now, although not their entire catalogs. You can browse the selection before you sign up (it's 9? a month for all you can read). They have audio books too.
