See this page at the Wiki. Most of it is PRS500-related, but the 10 resets method works for the 505.

Thanks Jeff for version v1.03. There appears to be an error in the Mac version. When unzipped there does not appear to be a properly formed application present.

I used the Windows version instead and that works great.

A query - I have a UK reader which has been flashed using the US updater.
Should I now use your v1.03 and select 1.2 or do I have to somehow get my reader back to a 1.2.
How do I do that with no backed up cramfs.Fsk.img and cramfs.Rootfs.img files?

I'm not sure it there is a hardware difference that makes a UK reader different or if the US updater makes it identical to a US reader.

As far as we know, the hardware is identical.

You essentially have a US Reader (your about screen should report 1.1), so use the 1.1 option for PRSCustomizer. There is currently no way (other than the Sony Updater) to flash a cramfs.Rootfs.img and that's locked into the US version via a checksum. To get your UK userland back (which is all that really matters) is dead simple - you just use the #4 option of the Universal Flasher. If you need a UK cramfs.Fsk.img drop me a pm.

Just to let you know, the switch back to UK version worked ok.
And I have just patched with the new V1.03.
Worked perfect, I have the clock, Icon set 2, and the uniform font size.

Hi Jeff, and others,
I've had my 505 about a week and love it! I tried customizing it yesterday without success. First, I used a Sony memory stick instead of the SD card. I started flashing, but after selecting option 5, I got a message saying that file ... could not be found. I then selected "6" and got a similar message and after reboot, nothing. So I tried with an SD card with the same results. I eventually used the new firmware option and had to download and replace the firmware. I had the newest version anyway, prior to the flashing. I am putting the files, not the folder, directly on the empty SD card. I have the latest firmware. What else could I be doing wrong? I can try again later today if you need the exact file in the error message, I just have to run to work early today. Thanks!

Ok...I found time to document what I am seeing...

After I select option 5 I see:

Error copying the files from b:/files.5/5.1.1.00.18040/opt

After I select option 6 I see:

/TMP/self_upgrade/new_opt.img not found.

These are error messages produced by Igorsk's Universal Flasher. The UF constructs a flashable image based on the contents in the folders; in your case the folder in the root of the sd card: files.505.1.1.00.18040.

On the sd card, check the contents of files.505.1.1.00.18040/ - drill down through the folders and make note of the contents. In the folder "application" you should see the file kconfig.xml, in the folder "resources" you should see the file applicationStart.xml and in the folder "scripts" you should see the file main.xml. Are all these files present?
